Desertification
Presented by Stuti Sampriti Saint
What is desertification
• Desertification is land degradation
process in arid and semi-arid areas.
• Desertification is the process of
fertile land transforming into desert.
• It happens due to factors like
climate change, overgrazing,
deforestation and over cultivation.
• Unable to support any plant growth.
• It degrades soil quality reduces
vegetation and biodiversity.
Where does it happen?
• Mostly in semi-arid and dry regions.
(e.g. Thar desert Rajasthan, Sahara desert North Africa)
• Occurs in areas with thin soils, low rainfall.
• These regions associated with loose sediments prone to
erosion.
Main Causes of desertification
• Overgrazing
• Drought
• Urbanization
• Climate change
• Over cultivation
• Deforestation
• Natural disasters.
Effects
• Environmental effect
• Economical effect
• Social effects
• Loss of biodiversity
• Increases the occurrence of Floods, drought and other natural
disasters
• Loss of nutrients
• Poor water quality
• Vegetation is damaged
Landform
• Desert pavement
• Sand dunes
• Deflation hollows
• Gullies & Rills
• Playas
• Yardangs
Prevention
• Re forestation
• Rebuild soil profiles with organic input
• Soil & water management
• Controlled grazing
• Introduce proper technologies
• Tree residues can be used to improve soil quality and
support better water retention, benefiting plant growth
Thank you
