Captain Gopinath saw an opportunity to start a low-cost airline in India given the country's large population but relatively low number of air passengers. He studied helicopter industries in other countries and realized one could prosper in India. It took him over two years to obtain the necessary government licenses and clearances. He started with two helicopters and 35 lakhs in funding. Air Deccan focused on providing affordable air travel to the masses by keeping costs low through innovations like no meals or advance ticketing and operating flights to smaller cities with fewer daily flights.
