Dr. C.V. Raman was born in 1888 in Tamil Nadu, India. He had an illustrious academic career, obtaining his B.A. with first rank and gold medal and his M.A. and IRS examinations with first rank. In 1917, he became a professor at Calcutta University. In 1928, he discovered the Raman effect, the scattering of light, for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1930. He made several other contributions in optics, acoustics, and crystal dynamics.
