Muhamd Faiz Bin Alias.
Mohamad Muslim Bin Zamil.
Mohd Shamsol Zulkifli Bin Mat Darus.
Tertiary institutions and the labor market requirement “mismatches” is cause of jobless among graduates. According to Tan (2007), relevant and up to date career advice is not offered to university students. It happened when universities do not give students effective experience of the world of work also do not guide them on options for learning and career progress. Besides that, the graduates do not have the skills required by labor market. A study by Tan (2007), this is happen when labor market does not provide specific and extra training to graduates and labor market is becoming more competitive. Tan (2007, as cited in Hassan,) states universities are not sensitive to the market economy. This will happen when universities are not concerned about the place where students go for industrial training. The effect of not being sensitive to market economy is universities do not consult the experts from the industry when devising the curriculum.
Another reason is graduates are being choosy when seeking jobs. They choosy about jobs because they need to pay back the loan. The effect of them having to pay back the loan are they need a job which pays them well and need to settle the loan or otherwise they will be blacklisted. Graduates have attitude problem. Chin (2007) has found, as graduates they refuse to work as an operator or a clerk. They prefer to work with government ant not the private sector because of their poor communication skills in English language. Graduates only apply for jobs connected with their tertiary studies. They only feel confident and comfortable to work in the field of their education background. Chin (2007) states they don’t want to do difficult things and they prefer to stay at home if they failed to secure the job. They are afraid that they can’t adapt to new things and they are afraid to explore new things.
Furthermore, students need to develop soft skills to help them secure a job. The soft skills can be developed by Human Resources Ministry. Human Resources Ministry must organize programmers that develop unemployed graduate’s soft skills. Chin (2007) indicates, unemployed graduates must be persuaded to take up training by giant supermarkets. Not only that, graduates are required to develop confidence and have the initiative to start own business. Unemployed graduates should develop soft because graduates do not have many choices of work to apply for. The limited choices are, they refuse to apply for government jobs requiring only SPM qualification and refuse to start at the bottom as police constables, fire fighters and prison guards. Unemployed graduates also should develop entrepreneurial skill to start their own business ventures in a related field. Chin (2007) notes, capital can be arranged with financial institutions. Graduates can convince retailers to provide them training.
Another measure involves a review of the tertiary education system. Soft skills development should be incorporated into the curriculum to encourage students to participate in extra- curricular activities to enhance soft skill such as character building, interpersonal skills and critical and creative thinking skills (Haron, 2006). These skills should be acquired through participation in those activities while doing their degrees. Apart from that, the curriculum needs to be revised to ensure that more learner-centred activities which require student to be involved in discussions and case studies evaluation during academic lessons are integrated into the syllabus. These activities will enable them to practice communicating with others, take turns leading the groups and take part in problem-solving cases. According to Dato’ Seri Mustapa Mohamed , it is important that the review is done on yearly basis (cited in Lim, 2005). This is aimed at keeping graduates updated with recent expectations of the labour market, so they will regard universities as the place where they can harbor their effort to gain as mush advice, knowledge, and expertise as possible.
