Background
 The Memorial Union, ASU’s student “Hub” is place
 where students can gather to socialize, eat, and study.

   The MU provides students with many services such as
    several places to eat, ATM’s and banking centers, study
    nooks and lounges, and even a bowling alley and arcade
    center!
• RESEARCH PURPOSE: Find out what the best use of the empty
spot in the MU will be for ASU students

•RESEARCH OBJECTIVES: Determine how to make the best use of
the vacant spot

•RESEARCH QUESTION: Do students spend most of their time
eating or studying in the Memorial Union?
Data Collection
Our Research Design
 We conducted a survey to
  evaluate how students spend
  their time in the MU
 We asked questions such as:
    What’s your GPA
    How much time do you spend
     in the MU a week?
    How much time do you spend
     in the Library?

    Demographics, survey
     method, convenience sample

  1. “ The Memorial Union, or MU as it is familiarly called, serves as the campus community center for students, faculty, staff and guests of Arizona State University. The four-level building features a variety of programs, services and opportunities for student involvement -- all under one roof! The following dining venues are available in the MU: Engrained Cafe, Pitchforks, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Freshens, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Jamba Juice, Jump, Zoca, Extreme Pita, Quiznos Subs, Papa Johns, Starbucks, Taco Bell, Outta Here and the MU P.O.D convenience market. Businesses located in the building include Arizona State Savings & Credit Union, Ink and Toner Refill Center, Serenity Salon, Print U Copy Center and Sun Card Office, Brand X Custom T-Shirts, Verizon Wireless and Wells Fargo Bank. In addition, a number of ATMs are located in the building.   2. A. We are the ASU planning committee, and there is a vacant spot in the MU. Our research purpose is to figure out how to best use the space depending on the needs and wants of ASU ’s students. We would like to survey whether students spend the majority of their time studying or eating in the MU. Also, we plan to make our decision based on the information we collect. The importance of this study is to make sure that the vacant spot will successfully hold a service that is what ASU students find the most useful for their needs and wants. B. Our research objective is to determine how to make the best use of the vacant spot in the MU. We will evaluate how students spend the majority of their time, either studying or consuming food from various MU vendors, to determine what type of area will be most useful in the MU. C. Research Questions: Do students spend the most time eating or studying in the MU?

  4. After running a regression analysis on every variable possible we found that GPA vs. Time Spent in the MU have a significant correlation. The Significance F value proves this to us as it is less that 0.05.
  5. Graphical representation of our findings in regards to the regression analysis performed To take a closer look at this relationship take a look at the following bar graph. As you can see students with higher GPA ’s tend to spend less time in the MU. This tells us that we are targeting the student with GPA’s of 3.5 or below as they are spending the most time in the MU.
  6. --P-Value is small, so we reject the null hypothesis. The average time spent in the MU is almost certainly different across favorite activities. --We can see that the students, who selected a restaurant as their favorite place, append less time in the MU each week than those who chose a retail space. Those students, whose favorite place in the MU is an area to study/socialize, tend to spend the most time, on average, in the MU each week. We think this is due to the time it inherently takes to complete each activity. A meal can be finished quickly, while a study session may last much longer.
  7. From the information we collected from the survey we performed we created this chart to illustrate how ASU students tend to spend their time at the MU. As you can see most people spend their time dining and eating, while in a close second others spend a large portion of their time studying or hanging with friends, and very few people spend their time shopping. Dining because of availability closed off quiet mix of study and dining central perk!!
