INTRODUCTION
• Academic freedom is a moral and legal concept
expressing the conviction that the freedom of
inquiry by faculty members is essential to the
mission of the academy as well as the principles
of academia, and that scholars should have
freedom to teach or communicate ideas or facts
(including those that are inconvenient to external
political groups or to authorities) without being
fear of repression, job loss, or imprisonment
DEFINE -ACADEMIC FREEDOM
• Academic Freedom, is the freedom
of teachers and students to teach,
study, and pursue knowledge and
research without unreasonable
interference or restriction from law,
institutional regulations, or public
pressure.
ACADEMIC FREEDOM IN THE USA
• Loosely guaranteed through the first
amendment in the United States
• Defined by the 1940 Statement of
Principles on Academic Freedom and
Tenure, authored by the American
Association of University Professors
(AAUP) and the Association of American
Colleges and Universities
