EARLY LIFE
Born on 28th June,1940 in Chittagong
Parents - Hazi Dula Mia Shoudagar , Sufia Khatun
Spouse – Afrozi Yunus
Daughter- deena afrozi yunus
EDUCATION
Studied at Lamabazar Primary School in 1944
Passed matriculation exam from Chittagong Collegiate School
Later studied at Chittagong College
Enrolled in the department of Economics at Dhaka University in
1957
Completed BA in 1960 and MA in 1961
Obtained PhD in economics from Vanderbilt University
EARLY CAREER
 Appointed as lecturer of economics in Chittagong college in 1961
 Joined Bureau of Economics as a research assistant
 was an assistant professor of economics at Middle Tennessee State University in
Murfreesboro from 1969-1972
 Returned to Bangladesh and joined Chittagong University as head of the
economics department
 Involved in poverty reduction and established rural economical program after
observing the famine of 1974
 Developed a Nabajug (new era) Tenhaga Khamar (3 share farm) in 1975
 Secured a loan for the government Janata Bank
 Pilot project began for poor Bangladeshis and named as Grameen Bank on 1st
October,1983
 Grammen issued USD $6.38 billion to 7.4 million borrowers by July 2007
 Started to diversify by attending underutilized fishing ponds and irrigation pumps in
late 80’s
 In 1989 fisheries projects like Grameen motsho and Grameen Krishi begain

 Extends banking facilities to poor men and women
Eliminates the exploitation of the poor by money lenders

household within the fold of an organizational format which they can
understand and manage by themselves.
Reverse the age old vicious circle of “low income, injection of credit,
investment, more income more savings”.

BUSINESS GROWTH
The Bank has been distributing dividends among its shareholders
since 2006.
Before that it could not pay dividends because of the central bank
instructed to keep the profit in its disaster fund.
Paid 62 lakh shareholders 30% annual dividends in 2008.
The government received total of tk 25 crore against 20 crore of
investment from grameenbank in 20016
 Grameen Bank Officials said the new pay-scale encouraged the
employees to put in more effort in lending and recovering loans.
The Head office undertook month-based activities from first month of
the year in 2017.

Because of Grameen Bank the people of rural areas are living a better
life, specially women
From the whole discussion we saw that how Yunus managed to come
to this position. He has faced many difficulties but he did not give up.
He has set an example for us to see that we all can do something to
bring a change in society.
