A comminuted fracture breaks a bone into more than two pieces, usually two major fragments and a smaller one. An open or compound fracture occurs when an open wound reaches the fracture site or a bone fragment protrudes through the skin. A greenstick fracture is an incomplete break on the curved side of a bone.
