The Chao Phraya River is the main river in Thailand and forms the central drainage basin, connecting rivers and canals across the country in a dendritic pattern. The river basin covers over 35% of Thailand and includes a large delta near the Gulf of Thailand that has very fertile soil used for agriculture. Major cities like Bangkok grew up along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, as villages were originally established there for survival and defense.

mouth of Nile River (just out of the Mediterranean Sea.
