2. CALIBRATION OF LABORATORY
INSTRUMENTS
• WHAT is calibration
Calibration is the process of adjusting a device or measuring instrument so that its
readings are correct within a specified tolerance.
PURPOSE
ensure that the results of measurements made with a particular instrument are accurate
instrument are accurate and consistent.
Calibration is usually done by comparing the readings of the instrument to those of a
to those of a known standard,
In order to be calibrated, an instrument must first be calibrated against another standard
another standard of known accuracy.
3. • Calibration can be performed on a variety of instruments, including
pH meters, balances, scales, centrifuges & pipettes. The process
involves checking the accuracy of the instrument against a specific
measurement, and then adjusting the instrument accordingly.
• In most cases, calibration is performed on an annual or semi-annual
basis. By routinely calibrating lab equipment, scientists can be
confident that their results are reliable.
