- When brainstorming project ideas we identified that many individuals take risks in their lives and change careers. In the early stages dry, formal, generic, and information basedWe identified a space to create a documentary style transmedia narrativeCharacters who had pursued or were planning to switch careers
- Identified in many people’s lives our desire for a sense of security and stability can often mean compromising dream or passion. It takes the courage of an individual to make the decision to reconstruct their professional life.Within project, although the stories were all unique and intricately linked to personal circumstances, each individuals felt that taking a risk and embracing the change was beneficial to their happiness.
- To quote Greek philosopher Heraticus ‘ Nothing endures but change’ or rather the only constant in our lives is change which seems to run through the stories. The change may have been difficult but long term generally a positive. - To quote Sarah ‘just do it, because life is too short especially for people who are in a job that feel stuck, they need to get over it and try it because I think 9/10 it works out for the best’.
- In a recent blog post Henry Jenkins expands upon his theories on transmedia and convergence culture. He acknowledges media producers are now easily able to connect social networks to each other and therefore actively shaping the circulation of media content. http://henryjenkins.org/convergence_culture/ (Sept 2010)Emerging tools such as our primary hub that is Storify actively encourage creators to do this. Storify is a tool that ‘helps it’s users tell stories by curating social media’ It enables you to import content from all sources from the web by placing a snippet or grab of content and providing a hyperlink to the original media within the story. Able to import content from other sources to tell a transmedia narrative, encouraging content to be incorporating convergence. We were able to place our own work from Facebook, Twitter, Vimeo, Tumblr and Soundcloud as well as bringing in images and links from our interviewees own websites and Facebooks where appropriate.
- Andrea Phillips – transmedia theorist in her work ‘A Creators Guide to Transmedia Storytelling’ proposed a model for this type of narrative – I quote “the scattered form of transmedia communication is whereby a handful of thematically associated stories are “splintered” across multiple platforms” This idea informed the style of content we chose to create Short focused interviews, self-contained cinemagraphs and then creating short pieces of media content using this audio and video material – remixing it and distributing the important parts over the platforms.
- Although each platform has it’s own purpose and functions there will always be hyperlinks to other sources and material which enable users to move around the project.
- - Original approach to project was to focus on what content suits which platform. This made pre-production quite difficult and we found ourselves stalling, discussing how to control the audience as one may have more power to do with old media formats. Took the idea and allowed the theme to inform the way we interpreted and framed our content. Found it necessary to refine questions and the type of content we were making. First few interviews were not as successful. Was a matter of focusing upon the idea of risk within each individual rather than conducting longer interviews as one may do with traditional documentary style narratives.-Not getting caught up in perfecting content, more important to test out separate platforms and prototype.
- - Aware the project is still a prototype, still room to add and interact with the organisations such as the Age’s ‘The Switch’ which was our original intention.
