• While European football had gone through good times in the 1970s and
1980s to the late 1980s British football was in a critical moment. The
stadiums were in poor condition, the hooligans provoked riots in games
and began to increase more and more in number, and the English clubs
could not play in European competition following the Heysel tragedy in
1985, where 39 fans died.
• In 1992 the First Division teams renounced the Football League en masse
and May 27, 1992 the Premier League was formed so limited company not
dependent on the Football Association based in an office in the facilities
that then the Football Association in Lancaster Gate. This meant the end
of 104-year-old Football League that had operated until then with four
divisions; the Premier League would operate as a single division, the first,
and the Football League with the other three.
4. BIG FOUR *2000*
• in the mid-2000s was the
domain of the clubs that made
up the so-called "Big Four":
Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and
Manchester United. During this
decade, and particularly from
2002 to 2009, these clubs have
dominated the top four places
in the league, giving these a
place to compete in the UEFA
Champions League
5. Development
• In the 2007-08 season 20 teams participated. In 2007, the
league changed its name from "FA Premier League" to simply
"Premier League". The Welsh club Swansea City promoted to
the Premier League in the 2011-12 season, becoming the first
non-English team to compete in this league. The August 20,
2011, the first league game was played outside England
between Wigan Athletic and Swansea City at the Liberty
