The causes of premature ejaculation are unclear and many theories have been proposed but lack evidence, including that it results from masturbating quickly as a teen, anxiety, or relationship issues. Several potential physiological factors are hypothesized to contribute, such as serotonin receptors, genetics, penile sensitivity, and atypical nerve conduction. Research has identified the nucleus paragigantocellularis brain region as involved in ejaculatory control and found evidence that premature ejaculation may be genetically linked or associated with faster neurological pelvic muscle responses.
