2. Introduction - Task 1
• My first initial task was to take pictures of a person to practice
our photography skills for the upcoming magazine cover
project. This task had a purpose of making us centralize the
person using the different shots we’ve learnt and by also
leaving a space, of about 3 fingers to make it well structured.
This helps with centralizing the pictures and making it look
even, that’s why some phones have them when taking a
square picture. During this task we also learnt how to make
the pictures look aesthetically pretty by making the “model”
pose differently but still behind a neutral background. The
poses of these pictures are useful to make them have more
character, and maybe show more depth.

6. Mast-head: The front cover
has a big title with the white
that makes it stand out. The
white could represent a color
of peace and cool, which
makes the school look
professional and
accommodating. So the
viewer would see it as an
open school.
The main image is of a school girl with a
science uniform, which shows how they’re
professional and signifies that they’re
responsible students in that school
The colors used on
the cover are
mainly white,
which goes well
with the green
board in the
background. But
those in other
colors would pop
out and catch the
public’s attention
On the cover image they also
have a few books, and
objects to make it look like
they are prepared and have
the material for the classes.
The main cover line is the
back to school ad, which
unlike the other text it’s in
yellow, which normally is a
happy color and stands out
from the other cover lines.
And the the font is also in
bold which is thicker, more
obvious.
The fonts of the cover lines
are with a casual and friendly
that make us think it’s a nice
environment to put your kid
in.
Another cover line that attracts us is the one about the science
fair, and it’s white like the others but it’s also in a different more
eye catching font.
The other cover line that is
blue could also be
something that would
catch our attention.
7. Typography: The style of
the text in this page is
pretty boring, without any
character except maybe
for the “contents” title.
And also the ”pages" are
bold.
Color: The colors of this
page aren’t very out there,
they’re mostly low tone
like brown, black and
purple. The way they
combined the colors isn't
really that pleasing to the
viewer.
Layout: the layout has
some kind of pattern with
a text then a picture on
the side, it’s lacking a bit
of character but it doesn’t
look that boring. The
picture of the school and
students add more
personality.
Camerawork: 2 of the pictures are 2 shots with only 2 students and
the desk with books, and the other one is of the school building; an
establishing extreme long shot.
Language: The language
used is not really special,
it’s pretty simple and it’s
simple. They’re more like
bullet points.
Mise-en-scene: On this
page the way this is
presented is very basic,
there’s not a lot of flavor.
Which maybe could make
the school look like it’s
more professional and
strict but usually that’s not
something you wan the
viewers to see.
Mode of address: Like
before there isn’t much of
a stand out thing about
their way of writing, it’s
more straight to the point,
obvious and practical.
8. Masthead typography analysis:
The title for this magazine cover is sans serif,
the font itself is pretty simple. There are a
few of the “circles” with red, yellow and
blue filled in , which makes it kind of pop,
from the “Bill” to the “board”. Apart from
that it’s pretty simple.
For this masthead it looks more traditional
because of the serif, in these kind of
magazines by the cover you would already
know it’s more for the older generation,
and it has more serious and mature
subjects. The color is also pretty neutral and
serious. The letters are also all put together
and it just in general looks more for the
older generation.
9. On this masthead there’s a mix of both sans serif and serif with the “teen” sans serif and the
“vogue” with serif. The reason why they’re different is because vogue is already an adult fashion
magazine masthead so to make it more kiddy like for the younger generation there’s the more
unprofessional look. The way also the vogue is in black, which is plain and old, whereas the the
teen is in a more vibrant color.

Questionnaire
summary
After conducting market research in the
form of questionnaire using main five
questions in regards to magazine design
and content I have created design and
content specifications:
• The type of color scheme that is going
to be used are the colors of the school
logo with also a bit of bright and bold.
• To catch the viewers attention we will
make use of a well structured layout
and have a noticeable main image on
the front cover
• For the content page there will be a
well structured layout, easy to navigate
and understand to keep the viewers
observation track.
• As for the stories in the magazine,
extra curricular activities and useful
school information will be the main
topics.
• Entertainment wise, interviews and
touristic places to visit and things to
see, around the area, will be the key
articles.

32. How have you used media conventions
in your preliminary task?
My preliminary task was to create a school magazine front
cover and content page.
Firstly, I have used media conventions in this task, such as, for
the layout of the magazine. I have based it on the
conventional school magazines, giving my design a
professional and organized feel to it. The font use on the
magazine front cover is relevant to what is currently stylish as
well as being easy to read which is what students look for in a
magazine. The images featured in the magazine are all original
and comply t the medium and close up that which is
requested. The content is relevant to school life and included
on enjoyable and leisure articles.
33. How have you used media language in
your product?
I have used media language in my product. Creating the
intended effect for the use of shot types/angles is so the
target audience can connect with the image, making them
want to read the magazine. The mise-en-scene being the
subject holding books and a back pack means the reader can
relate to the subject as they have the same . The tie and shirt
of the image creates a professional feel to the magazine and
will make the target audience aspire to the image . The layout
is organized around the main image which is visually pleasing
which will attract the desired readers. The font use is
contemporary and relevant to the meaning of the words
making the magazine more interesting and .. . The colour
scheme is a mixture of many colors in order to attract both
genders and to catch the audience’s eye.
34. How have you addressed your
audience?
The magazine has communicated to the audience through
various modes of address, the image is a formal as to inspire
young international students. However the language is
informal due to the way teenagers communicate today which
will attract the target audience and it is easy to understand
and relate to them. The articles are about student interests,
focused around their surroundings and school life making the
magazine desirable. As well as having educational articles
such as “studying tips” I have included the enjoyable
magazine activities like debates and pop quizzes. The
magazine also includes “sports news” and “school snack”
which encourages healthy eating and participation in sport
activities.
35. What skills have you developed during
the preliminary task?
I have developed many skills through out this
task such as, I have learned how to analyze
magazine front covers in more depth and by
using AS level terminology. As well as advancing
my research abilities.
