Preeclampsia and eclampsia are hypertensive disorders of pregnancy characterized by new onset hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation. Preeclampsia can progress to eclampsia, defined as tonic-clonic seizures in a pregnant woman unrelated to other causes. Delivery is the only cure for both conditions, as termination of pregnancy resolves symptoms.
