structural analysis.

  I’ve been collecting
   shells of different
    shapes and sizes
         lately.

____ collecting, letting nothing interrupt him
____ Before reaching home
____ before releasing the pigeon
____ the rains pouring down his happy face
When you were six, seven or eight years old, what
objects or things did you use to collect? Why did you
collect such things? Where did you keep them? Record
your answers in the chart.

Things I used to collect   I used them to/for:   Place of keeping
Disgrace- shame, dishonor: being out of
          favor
Enormous- excessive; very great; huge
Lump- a swelling, a small shapeless mass
Neophyte- a beginner in anything
Nosy- a person discovers by prying; looking
          around in a suspicious manner
1.Suddenly, just when the class is about to be dismissed , it begins to
rain.

3. As soon as Farfounet’s father saw and read the message fastened to
the bird’s leg, he lost no time in driving in the school.

frog.
 A complex sentence is made up of an independent
    clause and a subordinate clause
   A complex sentence can have more than one
    subordinate clause
   An independent clause has a subject and a predicate
    and it can stand on its own as a sentence
   A dependent or subordinate clause cannot stand alone
    as a sentence. It must be combined with an
    independent clause.
   A subordinate clause is introduced by a subordinating
    conjunction such as: after, although, as, as if, as soon
    as, because, before, if, since, so
    that, than, though, unless, until, when, whenever, and
    while.
 A. Write independent or subordinate to classify each
 underlined clause.

 open.
 ________2. Ivan moved into Fatima’s room after she
 went to college.
 ________3. When the moon appeared, crickets
 chirped and frogs croaked.
 ________4. Because the day was sunny and hot.
 Francis went to the beach.
 ________5. A cloud shaded the sun as we laid our
 blankets on the sand.
B. Read the following sentences . Underline the independent
 clause once and underline the subordinate clause twice.
  1.Because their cat sometimes wondered there, the
 children walked to the old haunted house after supper.
 2.They were not afraid although it was already dark.
 3.When mutya sneezed suddenly. Everyone jumped.
 4.After the thunder sounded, the door to the house closed.
 5.Before they could decide to run, they heard a creaking
 noise.
 6.The creaking became louder as they stood in the dark.
 7.Lightning lit up the room,so that, they could see a long
 shadow.
 8.They had been afraid before, but they had never known
 real terror until that moment.
C. Complete the following by adding a subordinate
 clause.
