Bertolt Brecht was a remarkable 20th century poet known for political and satirical poetry. His poem "General, Your Tank is a Powerful Vehicle" uses irony to undermine the strength of despotic power. Each line in the poem is an ironic statement about the indomitable might of the general's tank. As a socialist, Brecht believed that human thinking has the power to change history, and that people are more powerful than any machine. However, paradoxically the thinking person is under the control of those in power. While power can control the world temporarily, critical thinkers will eventually break free and shape the course of history through human thought.
