5. First Arrival
When I first arrived to the class
Mrs. Ortiz introduced me to the
students and I got to sit down at her
desk while she began to greet the
class and take attendance. I was
quickly taken in by the many
motivational posters and beautiful
decorations. I could see how the
kids in the class could stay
interested in the subject. The
students helped me feel welcome
from the start, they were all very
kind to me

6. Verbal/Written Review
On the second day that I arrived one of the assignments Mrs. Ortiz gave her
students was a review of the school year and her teaching methods. She told
the students to each take out a piece of paper. She then would ask a a series
of questions pertaining to her methods of instruction and then asked the
students to comment on whether they would like to see future changes
whether it be more lessons or more verbal assessments, etc.
Once she collected all the papers we then sat down at her desk and reviewed
the answers while the students watched a movie called Safe Haven.
She told me that every year she conducts this review and makes several
alterations to her lesson plans so that there can be improvement in the
class.

7. Extra Credit / Grading
For the end of the year Mrs. Ortiz told her students to bring in the two
review books that they used for the AP Exam, She asked each student
to come up and hand in their books. For each book they would receive
and extra credit A. Throughout this process I was able to see how she
spoke to students one on one. She was respectful, and tried to help
each student get a better grade for the end of the year, even if the extra
credit did not change their grade, she told them that it would help
their overall GPA. and able to see a little about how the Grade Book
worked.
Throughout the grading process, Mrs. Ortiz received a call about a
concerned parent regarding their children’s performance and grade in
the class. She stepped outside to take the call, and when she came
back she explained how although the parent was impatient she made
sure to be calm and respectful always. She carefully reviewed all of the
students grades and assignments to the parents and also explained
how she told the student on multiple occasions what she needed for
her to pass the class.

8. End of the Year Party
For the end of the year party Mrs. Ortiz wanted it to be
a celebration for her AP class as well as honoring them
for raising money for the Cancer Research
Foundation.
She asked the class what they wanted to do as far as
watching a movie or setting up a video game a system
for everyone to play.She made sure to tell them that if
they chose a movie it had to be rated G, PG, or PG-13.
For food and refreshments, she asked the students if
they had any allergies, and made sure to pick foods
that were not spicy and gave options for vegetarians.
The day of the party the kids were excited to finally
have made it to the end of the year. Some brought
their own homemade desserts, and I got to try a few :)

9. Final Remarks
At the end of the class I asked Mrs. Ortiz if I could
get 10 minutes alone with the class, during this
time I asked the students to give their opinion of
their year with her and what they thought about
her. I asked each student to write down a nice
comment or memory on the board with their
name. It was nice to read all the comments, and it
touched me how a teacher could have such an
effect on her students. I would like to someday
get that chance to help students learn and reach
their potential. When I finally brought Mrs. Ortiz
back in, she was surprised and very moved to see
that I put something so simple yet so profound
together in a matter of minutes. I will always
remember my first set of observational hours.
