WHOLE CLASS ACTIVITY
23. Objectives: Pupils will:
❏ Identify and use adjectives to make comparisons.
❏ Use adjectives to construct oral and written sentences.
24. ❏ An adjective is a word used to describe a noun or pronoun. Adjectives can be
used to compare things. Most adjectives have three degrees of comparison:
positive, comparative and superlative.
❏ The comparative form of the adjective compares two things: The Rio Minho is
longer than the Milk River.
❏ The superlative form is used to compare three or more things: The Nile is the
longest river in Africa.
❏ Adjectives of three or more syllables and some of two syllables form the
comparative by using ‘more’. They form the superlative by using ‘most’.
Example: I have more money than you do. Brian Lara is the West Indian
cricketer with the most runs in both Test Cricket and One Day International
Cricket.
❏ A few adjectives use completely new words for the comparative and superlative
26. Let’s observe...
❏ How do the objects in
the previous picture
differ from these
objects?
❏ What do you see?
27. The first image had regular cell phones, or what we Jamaicans call,
‘Bangers’. These cell phones are not packed with a host of cool
features as more recent cell phones are.
Modern cell phones are called smart phones. This is because of the many other
things you can do with them aside from sending and receiving calls and
messages. Can you list some of these things?
❏ Listen music
❏ Online banking
❏ Online shopping
❏ Take pictures and capture videos
❏ Control other machines such as drones and household appliances and
lights.
❏ Flashlight setting
28. The word ‘smart’ as in smart phone, is an adjective. It describes
one type of phone which is being compared to another type,
‘regular’ phone. The word, ‘regular’, too is used here as an
adjective.
29. Observe the following image.
How does each word each relate to
the image above it?
Make a sentence using the
adjective and its related
image.
31. Have a look at this...
Adjectives can change their form
based on the degree of
comparison. The suffixes ‘er’ and
‘est’ are used to indicate these
changes.
Observe the ‘irregular
adjectives’ section. How are
they different from regular
adjectives?
