Future Electricity Markets: key pillars with high shares of wind and PVLeonardo ENERGY
More and more countries world-wide are targeting high shares of wind and solar photovoltaics in their electricity mix. To integrate high shares of these variable renewable energy sources, the electricity system needs to become more flexible in order to balance supply and demand at all times. The webinar will discuss key design features of future electricity markets, including incentives for more flexible fossil-fuel based and renewable-based power generation, modifications to the design of electricity markets, incentives for more flexible demand, and storage options.
These are the supporting materials used by the different speakers of the H2020 WHY project opening session. This evento was held on September 10, 2020.
Clean Restructuring: design elements for low carbon wholesale marketsLeonardo ENERGY
This session is part of the Clean Energy Regulators Initiative Webinar Programme.
Theme 1 - The Evolving Role of Network Regulators.
Module 2: Design Elements for Low Carbon Wholesale Markets
Clean Restructuring: Design Elements for Low Carbon Wholesale Markets and Beyond, a 21st Century Power Partnership report, describes the movement from a vertically integrated power sector toward a more participatory and clean energy-friendly electricity system. The report focuses on the design of competitive wholesale markets that rely increasingly on variable renewable electricity (vRE) sources, demand response, and other flexible, clean energy options.
The webinar will review three main areas of consideration for decision makers embarking on a clean restructuring process: planning and procurement, market operation rules, and network expansion and grid code. The report features case studies of clean restructuring for Mexico, Denmark and Germany, and the webinar will focus on current clean restructuring efforts in Mexico by the co-authors of the case study, Hector Beltran and Jose Maria Valenzuela.
Germany is Europe’s biggest energy consumer. As a large and industrial country with moderate natural endowments, it sets an example of what can be done with a progressive energy policy. Germany leads the charge on renewables, has an ambitious energy efficiency policy, is committed to phasing out nuclear power generation and uses ETS revenues fully for the fight against climate change. However, the future of the German energy transition is rather uncertain. Are energy prices sustainable with the current high taxation rates? How to expand the high-voltage grid to integrate wind generation from the North? What will be the future role of coal and gas? This webinar presentation reviews the most important energy statistics for Germany, focussed on a few highlights of its energy policy and concludes with a series of open discussion points.

Challenges and Opportunities of Renewable Energy Research 2020 and beyondLeonardo ENERGY
The renewable energy industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in Europe thanks to two factors: the supportive political and legal frameworks and the region’s prominent investment in renewable energy research and development.
With the new emphasis on rapid implementation of renewable energy technologies to achieve the 2020 targets, the EUREC Agency decided to revisit the research priorities in terms of how research can and should contribute to the achievement of those targets. Whilst the research itself provides the means to achieve the European ambitions of sustainable growth and competitiveness, it should also be recognised that it provides an important educational tool for the training of the highly skilled workforce who will design and implement the new energy systems of the future.
This webinar will present a general overview of the policy and research activities which in EUREC’s view are needed to underpin the growth of the renewable energy industry by 2020, with a special focus on the critical role which European postgraduate higher education is set to play. Founded in 1991, EUREC Agency’s mission is to improve the quality and scope of European research and development in renewable energy technologies (RET). Its 43 members are Europe’s leading organisations in renewable energy scientific research, covering all its aspects.
SECO looks at how to manage the energy demands of the many elements when you have many sources, including the grid, but also local wind turbines, solar panels, geo-thermal as well as a local generator and possible energy storage. SECO optimises this many-to-many problem to ensure demand is met and that the cost of energy is minimised.
The European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan)Leonardo ENERGY
The European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) aims to accelerate the development and deployment of low-carbon technologies. It seeks to improve new technologies and bring down costs by coordinating research and helping to finance projects. The SET-Plan promotes research and innovation efforts across Europe by supporting technologies with the greatest impact on the EU's transformation to a low-carbon energy system. It promotes cooperation amongst EU countries, companies, research institutions, and the EU itself.
IndustRE - Renewables and Industrial Demand Side ManagementLeonardo ENERGY
IndustRE is a H2020 project with two aims within two timeframes.
Project Aims
The flexibility potential of large industrial users’ electricity demand presents an opportunity to deal simultaneously with two issues at the top of the European energy policy agenda:
Cost-effective integration of variable renewable electricity
into the power systems of Europe
The rising cost of electricity and its effects on the
competitiveness of European industry
Within the IndustRE project, the electricity-intensive industries of Europe work closely with the renewable energy sector in order to promote innovative business models and regulatory improvements that create win-win situations. The project aims to:
Present suitable business models and facilitate their
adoption
Formulate policy recommendations
Quantify the potential benefits for the power system
Move industry and variable renewable energy plant operators into action

The Venezuelan PARADOXS of the so called “Socialism of the 21st century”.Sogefi Group
Several oil service companies suspended or slowed operations in Venezuela this year due to difficulties in obtaining payment
from PDVSA, which is struggling because of low oil prices, as well as a decrease in oil production, and a decaying socialist
economy.
Contractors have cut back the drilling of oil in Venezuela amid a rising unpaid debt owed to suppliers by the Latin American
country’s government and state-owned producer PDVSA. On June 28th 2016, Baker Hughes reported that the number of oil
rigs in Venezuela dropped from 69 to 59 in May of this year. The CEO of the Italian oil and gas contractor Saipem SpA, said
that in April the company had suspended 89 percent of his operation rigs in Venezuela (25 of its 28 rigs). Other companies as
Schlumberger or Halliburton Co are reducing their activities in Venezuela also by the unpaid services bills.
Since 1998, oil production in Venezuela has been reduced by 750,000 barrels per day, with output falling by 250,000 barrels
per day in the first half of 2016 alone, according to Dr. Francisco Monaldi, a fellow in Latin American Energy Policy at the Baker
Institute at Rice University in Houston. Luisa Palacios, a senior managing director at Medley Global Advisors LLC, said that
exports in Venezuelan crude has fallen by more than 300,000 barrels per day in June 2016, compared with 2015 average,
while the rest of OPEC is ramping up production....
