1 Now on the first day of the week Mary
Magdalene went to the tomb early, while
it was still dark, and saw that the stone
had been taken away from the tomb.
John 20:1-10
2 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter,
and to the other disciple, whom Jesus
loved, and said to them, “They have
taken away the Lord out of the tomb,
and we do not know where they have
laid Him.”
John 20:1-10
3 Peter therefore went out, and the other
disciple, and were going to the tomb. 4 So
they both ran together, and the other
disciple outran Peter and came to the
tomb first. 5 And he, stooping down and
looking in, saw the linen cloths lying
there; yet he did not go in.
John 20:1-10
6 Then Simon Peter came, following him,
and went into the tomb; and he saw the
linen cloths lying there, 7 and the
handkerchief that had been around His
head, not lying with the linen cloths, but
folded together in a place by itself.
John 20:1-10
8 Then the other disciple, who came to
the tomb first, went in also; and he saw
and believed. 9 For as yet they did not
know the Scripture, that He must rise
again from the dead. 10 Then the
disciples went away again to their own
homes.
John 20:1-10
The Power
of the
Resurrection
 Importance of the resurrection
Jesus is who He said He was!
God has power over life AND death
The Power of the Resurrection
 Practical evidence
The stone, sealed and guarded by
Romans soldiers was rolled away.
The body was removed – was it stolen?
By Romans?
By Jews?
By Christians?
Evidence of the Resurrection
 Eyewitness Testimony
Mary Magdalene
Apostles w/o Thomas
Apostles incl. Thomas
500+ brethren at once
Two men on road to Emmaus
Saul of Tarsus on road to Damascus
WERE THEY LIARS, FRAUDS, DECEIVERS?
Evidence of the Resurrection
Practical evidence
Eyewitness Testimony
What is the real power of the
resurrection?
Power of the Resurrection
Jesus is the “firstfruits” of the
resurrection
Power of the Resurrection
20 But now Christ is risen from the dead,
and has become the firstfruits of those
who have fallen asleep. 21 For since by
man came death, by Man also came the
resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in
Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be
made alive.
1Corinthians 15:20-22
For if we have been united together in
the likeness of His death, certainly we
also shall be in the likeness of His
resurrection ….
Romans 6:5
….knowing that He who raised up the
Lord Jesus will also raise us up with
Jesus, and will present us with you.
2Corinthians 4:14
Jesus is the “firstfruits” of the
resurrection
We have hope because of the
empty tomb
Power of the Resurrection
Blessed be the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His
abundant mercy has begotten us again
to a living hope through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
dead ….
1Peter 1:3
If in this life only we have hope in
Christ, we are of all men the most
pitiable.
1Corinthians 15:19
50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and
blood cannot inherit the kingdom of
God; nor does corruption inherit
incorruption. 51 Behold, I tell you a
mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we
shall all be changed—
1Corinthians 15:50-57
52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an
eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet
will sound, and the dead will be raised
incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53 For this corruptible must put on
incorruption, and this mortal must put
on immortality.
1Corinthians 15:50-57
54 So when this corruptible has put on
incorruption, and this mortal has put on
immortality, then shall be brought to
pass the saying that is written: “Death is
swallowed up in victory.”
1Corinthians 15:50-57
55 “O Death, where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the
strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be
to God, who gives us the victory through
our Lord Jesus Christ.
1Corinthians 15:50-57
Jesus is the “firstfruits” of the
resurrection
We have hope because of the
empty tomb
We can live life without fear!
Power of the Resurrection
14 Inasmuch then as the children have
partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself
likewise shared in the same, that through
death He might destroy him who had the
power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and
release those who through fear of death
were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Hebrews 2:14,15
Do not fear any of those things which
you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil
is about to throw some of you into
prison, that you may be tested, and you
will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful
until death, and I will give you the crown
of life.
Revelation 2:10
