Power Circles
You should be the focus for your presentation not your slides, not your props. So you need to
understand how to use the 'stage' to make that happen. One of the techniques for doing this is
'Power Circles'.
On any 'stage', there is a point of power, the focal point. It's often in the middle and forward. Find
it and stand there if you are not using slides or the slides are above you. Ask a friend to help if
you can't feel it.
Don't wander about, it's distracting. Identify two or three power circles on the stage and move
between them. Plan when you want to move. Move, stand still and then make you next point. It
sounds very robotic written down but in practice it looks very natural. This technique introduces a
slight pause to help the audience to absorb your key points, builds gravitas and allows you talk
with passion and energy to different parts of the audience.
If you have slides, stand with the screen on your left as you face the audience. In the West, we
read left to right and then we 'carriage return' - back to your face if you stand on the left. You can
still use the power circle concept but just watch out you don't walk in front of the projector.
If this is too difficult right now, present from one place, stand still, with your feet planted and your
weight evenly over your shoes.
