Campus California partners with organizations to deploy volunteers to developing countries in order to establish sustainable resources that improve economic and environmental conditions. While poverty levels have dropped significantly in Latin America in recent years, 80 million people still live below the extreme poverty line of $2.50 per day. This level of poverty limits access to sanitation, healthcare, and education.

In the Philippines, over 22 million people, more than one-fifth of the population, live below the national poverty line. Poverty has negative impacts on health and development, as those living in poverty experience worse physical and mental health outcomes and are at higher risk for unhealthy behaviors. Poverty also affects children's growth and development both physically and cognitively. While some believe poverty can be overcome through hard work alone, reports show many Filipinos work hard yet remain in poverty due to unstable socioeconomic conditions.

Poverty negatively impacts children's development and health, with poor children being twice as likely to have stunted growth. Living in poverty also takes a psychological toll on children and parents, adding stress and sometimes leading to disrupted parenting. If child poverty is not addressed, it risks perpetuating an intergenerational cycle where the children of poor children become poor themselves, negatively impacting communities and societies. Addressing child poverty requires action and inspiration to change conditions for children worldwide.

- 2. With a mission to improve economic and environmental conditions stateside and abroad, Campus California partners with community organizations that deploy volunteers to impoverished countries. Through the support of Campus California, the groups are able to establish sustainable resources in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. With the continuous struggle to combat poverty in Latin America, the World Bank released information in July 2013 stating the bittersweet economic status of the region.

Unlike the United States, where the poverty threshold remains above $75 UDS a day for a family of five, Latin America’s extreme poverty line is at $2.50 USD per day while the poverty level is at $4 USD per day. Middle-income families in Latin America typically live on $10 to $15 USD per day. Fortunately in past years, the poverty level has dropped a significant amount. From 2005 to 2011, a 13 percent decrease in poverty was reported.
- 4. In 2011, the number of middle-class Latin American citizens also exceeded the number of impoverished residents. However, with positive outlook comes the reality that 80 million Latin Americans are still considered at or below extreme poverty levels. Beyond financial means, this affects access to proper sanitation, health care, and educational opportunities.
