This document discusses the relationship between financial exclusion, poverty, health, and wellbeing. It defines financial exclusion as limited access to mainstream financial services. Being financially excluded can increase health risks through the "poverty premium" of paying more for goods and services without access to cheaper payment methods. This can contribute to fuel poverty and cold, damp homes linked to various health conditions. Financial exclusion also limits access to affordable credit, increasing risks of unmanageable debt which has significant impacts on mental health. Overall, the document examines how financial difficulties can negatively impact physical and mental health.
The document summarizes the 1937 film "Dead End" about urban crime and poverty in 1930s New York City. It introduces the main characters: the Dead End Kids, a street gang led by Tommy; Drina, who tries to prevent her brother Tommy from a life of crime; and Dave, an unemployed architect who has an affair with Kay but ends up in a relationship with Drina. The film depicts the gritty lives of impoverished youth in New York who turn to petty crime and gang activity due to their socioeconomic circumstances.
The document discusses the impact of poverty on education. It notes that while poverty was traditionally seen as an urban issue, suburban poverty has been rising faster in recent decades. Researchers indicate there is no general education crisis, but rather a crisis of poverty, as countries with very low child poverty rates like Finland outperform the US, where 22% of children live in poverty. The effects of poverty on brain development and student achievement are significant, stressing the importance of enrichment programs in schools to help mitigate the impacts of poverty. Characteristics of high-poverty, high-achieving schools emphasize high expectations, data use, and a supportive culture.

This chapter discusses how culture influences various developmental processes. It covers how temperament, attachment, cognitive development, and moral reasoning may differ across cultures or be culture-specific, while still exhibiting some universal aspects. For cognitive development, Piaget's stages are universal in order but not necessarily in age or skills within each stage. Higher levels of moral reasoning may also be culture-specific rather than universally applicable. The chapter concludes that developmental research provides insights into cultural differences in human development.

The Effects of Poverty
Since human beings existed, poverty has been one of the major issues they encountered. Poverty is an extreme deficiency of fundamental human requirements, which include food, clean water, education, health and shelter. It is one of the most pressing challenges we face today since it causes many problems. According to The World Bank there are more than 1.6 billion live in extreme poverty. Also, studies have shown that poverty is the number one cause of death in the world, killing more than HIV/AIDs, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. As Gifford (2009) states, "Poverty is a huge challenge because it causes other very serious problems. It leads to starvation, disease and death on a massive scale". Poverty has many severe effects; the major ones are on health, education, and society.

There is a known correlation between poverty and environmental degradation internationally. Poor families in developing countries often disregard the environment in order to focus on survival, and poverty-stricken nations do not prioritize environmental conservation due to other social problems. In Tajikistan, over 50% of the population lives below the poverty line, and the country suffers from issues like unsustainable agriculture, lack of energy, and frequent natural disasters. International organizations are working to address the environmental and poverty issues in Tajikistan and other nations through initiatives, but more funding is still needed to fully solve the problems.
Multicultural Counseling and Theory (MCT) recognizes that cultural factors influence clients' worldviews and that traditional counseling theories were often developed based on white males. MCT aims to liberate clients from oppression and view them in their social context. Approaches to MCT include universal and culture-specific methods. MCT modifies traditional theories to respect human diversity and considers individuals within their cultural contexts.
Poverty has widespread negative impacts on the environment through various mechanisms. Those in poverty are often forced to strip resources simply to survive or pay off debts, leading to environmental degradation. However, not all humans have equal responsibility for environmental problems, as the consumption patterns of the world's wealthiest contribute disproportionately. Achieving true sustainability requires addressing both environmental and social issues, including the concentration of decision-making power regarding resource allocation. Education can help alleviate poverty by empowering individuals and breaking intergenerational cycles, but poverty also restricts access to education, creating a vicious cycle.
This document discusses poverty, including its causes, effects, and the poverty cycle. It defines absolute and relative poverty. The causes of poverty discussed include theories that the poor have little concern for the future or engage in self-defeating behaviors. The effects of poverty on children include higher rates of health problems, accidents, and missed school. Poverty also increases stress levels in families. The cycle of poverty refers to how poverty can span generations as those in poverty lack the resources to escape it.

A Place for Us Presentation (June 22, 2007)Andy Carswell
This slide show describes some of the challenges facing Athens, GA and some of the surrounding areas in terms of housing. It was presented in mid-2007.
This document summarizes a presentation on myths, realities and money related to long term infrastructure management. It examines societal myths that impact infrastructure, such as beliefs that countries like the US and Canada are declining. However, data from indices on development, prosperity and competitiveness show these countries remain among the best in the world. The realities of managing infrastructure over its lifecycle, including service levels, growth, risk and lifecycle costs are discussed. The impact of money and difficulties funding the over $1 trillion per year estimated global infrastructure gap are also covered.
During this presentation, Kristen Power discusses trends in financial aid and affordability. She examines who is currently receiving financial aid, noting that applicants come from a wider range of incomes than in the past. She also analyzes how tuition growth has outpaced income growth, challenging affordability. Finally, she considers strategies like diversifying financial aid funding sources and articulating a school's broader benefits to address affordability issues.

The document discusses productivity and economic growth. It begins by defining productivity as the efficient use of resources and measuring it as the ratio of total output to a specific input, such as labor. Productivity increases when there is more capital investment per worker (capital deepening) or technological improvements. Countries with higher levels of education, political stability, defined property rights, and greater investments in research and development tend to be more productive and have higher standards of living. While technological change may temporarily displace some workers, it ultimately benefits the economy by increasing productivity and the availability of affordable products.
This document presents information on whether the penny should continue to be produced in the United States. It discusses the rising costs of producing the penny compared to its monetary value, estimates that the US government loses over $100 million per year producing pennies, and examines policies in other countries like Canada that have successfully eliminated small coins. The document also reviews past attempts in the US to pass laws rounding cash transactions to the nearest 5 cents and limiting the use of pennies to $0.25 to reduce waste, but none have been successful yet.

This document discusses the economic value and impacts of surfing in California and the United States. It provides data showing that California beaches receive 17.8 million visits per year, generating $15 billion in economic impact. A case study of Trestles beach in Southern California estimates that surfers generate between $8-13 million in annual economic impact through their visits. Through a travel cost model, the total annual consumer surplus or economic value provided by Trestles surfers is estimated to be between $10-26 million. Nationwide, it is estimated that surfing generates $2-5 billion in annual economic impact for coastal communities through the 76 million surfing visits per year across the United States.
Vicinity Jobs’ data includes more than three million 2023 OJPs and thousands of skills. Most skills appear in less than 0.02% of job postings, so most postings rely on a small subset of commonly used terms, like teamwork.
Laura Adkins-Hackett, Economist, LMIC, and Sukriti Trehan, Data Scientist, LMIC, presented their research exploring trends in the skills listed in OJPs to develop a deeper understanding of in-demand skills. This research project uses pointwise mutual information and other methods to extract more information about common skills from the relationships between skills, occupations and regions.
In a tight labour market, job-seekers gain bargaining power and leverage it into greater job quality—at least, that’s the conventional wisdom.
Michael, LMIC Economist, presented findings that reveal a weakened relationship between labour market tightness and job quality indicators following the pandemic. Labour market tightness coincided with growth in real wages for only a portion of workers: those in low-wage jobs requiring little education. Several factors—including labour market composition, worker and employer behaviour, and labour market practices—have contributed to the absence of worker benefits. These will be investigated further in future work.
"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.
