Postmodernism In
South Park The Movie
Its a Musical!!!
• The South park movie is a musical and so
already is postmodern. It is very rare to see
people randomly in the street just singing and
so it is telling and showing the audience that it
is constructed. What also shows the audience
that it is constructed it the obvious fact that it
is a cartoon with highly unrealistic animation...
• The movie was actually nominated for an
Oscar for its song ‘Blame Canada’
Hyper Realism
• South Park is very well known for referencing
either people or events that have happened in
real life which creates a hyper realism. In the
film they have the character Sudam Husain
who is a very flamboyant homosexual man in
hell. They also make reference to Winona
Ryder and also the Baldwin Family.
Parody and Pastiche
• South Park have created many episodes where
they pastiche a lot of media texts for example
‘The Lord of the Rings’ and one episode that
was called ‘World War Zimmerman’. In the
film they Pastiche a lot of musicals but mainly
‘Lés Miserablés’. It is clear for musical fans
that the music, lyrics and plot are all rather
similar to Les Mis.
Anti Realism
• Although they create a hyper reality within the
show they also do so many things that create an
anti realism. A reoccuring theme throughout the
show is that one of the young boys ‘Kenny’ dies
in every single episode, but still manages to come
back in the next one. In the movie Kenny sets his
fart on fires and burns himself to death, The
doctors revive him but accidently replace his
heart with a potato which then explodes three
seconds later... Nice and realistic!
