This study explores the implications of the Johanna Marange Apostolic Church's (JMAC) resistance to contemporary health institutions on child rights in Zimbabwe. The JMAC has developed home-based institutions for expectant mothers and faith-based hospitals that do not utilize modern medicines, compromising the health of children. The religious teachings of the JMAC prohibit the uptake of contemporary medicines and emphasize spiritual healing instead, seriously compromising children's physical, social, and intellectual development. Male leadership enforces biblical perceptions against modern medicine on women and children, reinforcing gender disparities and denying females and children the right to seek contemporary medical care.

Maternal & Infant Risks Regarding Extreme Age of PregnancyAI Publications
Background: Extremes of maternal age are of considerable clinical and public health concern as it plays an important role in infant and maternal health. This study aims to determine the effect of extreme maternal age at pregnancy on a mother and infant’s health. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional analytical observational study, conducted on a pediatric outpatient clinic at Teaching Hospital, with a purposive sample of 450 mothers. A structured questionnaire was designed, which included socio-demographic data, factors related to pregnancy care, and factors related to the infant. Results: The main maternal health problem during pregnancy was anemia and pregnancy induced hypertension with a statistically significant association between the mother’s age and maternal morbidity. The main causes of baby admission into hospital were diarrhea and acute respiratory diseases, with a statistical significant. Conclusion: There was an agonizing correlation between extreme maternal age and infant health. A serious collaborative effort must be done between social worker in health facilities and community, to rise up awareness about the suitable age of marriage and reproductive health.

S9c1 chapter 1-facts and figures on health.Shivu P
Health is a continuous state of physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, and the person should be able to lead socially and economically productive life (WHO definition). It is very much essential to maintain the health of all the people all the time to keep ourselves healthy, happy and long living. For example you cannot fly peace fully in the flight if someone tells that some people in the same flight is having H1N1 infection. Whether it is communicable disease or non communicable it is necessary to keep all the people healthy. For example a young driver getting painless myocardial infarction can consume the life of all the passengers of his bus or the bus can hit the VIP's car travelling in the same road. So the leaders of the nation / world should not have the attitude that why should I bother if someone is sick somewhere. I feel the leaders of the nation and the world will understand the importance of maintaining the health of all the people with this simple examples. In this chapter some of the facts and figures related to the health is mentioned and it tells that we have not achieved the goals in health, that, what we can achieve for whatever the reasons. The reason may point towards anything like the doctor, minister, staff of the hospital, availability of the facility, roads, infrastructure, transportation facility and so on. Let us try to make all the people healthy, young and energetic.

Not since the 2002 publication of Community Programs to Promote Youth Development have we recommended adding any lengthy publications to the “must-read” list for youth workers, teachers, parents, or anyone interested in ensuring young people’s positive development. But make room on the bookshelf, because the time has come with the release of The Teen Years Explained: A Guide to Healthy Adolescent Development.

I already have answer for the discussion but I need to continue with the same interview I had for the discussion and do the assignment. It can be 2-3 pages instead of 4. Can you submit it by tomarrow? It has to be based on the interview provided in discussion. Assignment instructions are also stated below.
Below is the Discussion
Essential Services Personal Interview
Select a population (maternal, infant, child, adolescent, young adults, older adults, elderly) and research the most critical health issues affecting this population.
Describe the most critical health issues affecting your selected population.
Describe at least three public health/community services that exist in your own community to address these issues.
Contact one of these services’ directors (or representative) and inquire about the agency’s effectiveness by asking these questions:
Do you feel your organization has made a difference?
What are your main barriers and how are the barriers to services being addressed?
What are the ethical considerations of your services and how are they addressed?
How is your organization funded?
What concerns are still unmet in your opinion? Are these areas that will be addressed in the future?
What role does your organization play in the overall public health arena?
Present a brief overview of the organization, including its mission and goals/objectives, and then post your interview notes in the discussion forum
Your original post must contain at least one additional scholarly source in addition to the textbook.
ANSWER 1
The issue that I chose for my critical health issue is family planning and teenage pregnancies. For years, it seemed that everywhere I turned there were young teenage girls that were pregnant surrounding me. Currently, “the U.S. still has a teen birthrate of 31.2 per 1,000 teens, nearly one-and-a-half times the rate in the United Kingdom, which has one of the highest rates in Western Europe (Vestal, 2015, para. 1). I believe that prevention programs are the best method to reduce the high teenage pregnancy rates. The World Health Organization stated that, “family planning is a method for helping people to have the desired number of children and for spacing births” (as cited in Friis, et al., 2013, 5.2, para. 2). Healthy People 2020 set their goal for family planning to improve the spacing and planning of pregnancy, but also to prevent unwanted pregnancies (Friis, et al., 2013).
Covenant House has on-site counselors who help teen moms work on building confidence and gain independence. Moms can attend their workshops that teach them various parenting skills and the importance for them and their children to live healthy lives. The Covenant House also provides on-site childcare so that these have the capability to comp.
There are many ways to prevent a teenage girl from becoming pregnan

Bridging the gulf between Culture and Child Rights: Implications on the non uptake of
contemporary medicines within the Johanne Marange Apostolic Church
Tarisai Manyati (University of Zimbabwe)

Presented at the International Conference on Child Sensitive Social Policies, Meikles Hotel, 19-20 February 2014
In Sub Saharan Africa, the Johanna Marange Apostolic Church
(JMAC) arose as a syncretistic movement which embodies local
values and culture and fiercely resisted colonial institutions. The
members of the Johanne Marange Apostolic sect form a huge
social group with an estimated national population of 29.9% of the
women and 22.4% of the men making it the biggest religious
group in Zimbabwe (TARSC 2010).
Insufficient exploration has note been done in order to examine
the implications of the resistance of the of the JMAC to
contemporary health institutions vis a vis child rights. This study
explores this dichotomy with respect to health .
•This study used a qualitative methodology.
• Within the months of January and March 2013,In depth
interviews were held with: expectant mothers (n=3),children (3)
prophetess (n=3), health care worker (n=1), midwives (n=2),
elderly women (n=3)
• A review of secondary literature was also done from newspapers
, journals, survey reports and books.
• Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and translated into
English (where necessary)
• Data collected was coded and analyzed using thematic analysis.
• The JMAC has developed home based institution to cater
for the expectant mothers.
• The hospitals are faith based and they do not utilize
modern medicines compromising the children's health in
custodianship of their mothers.
•
The religious teaching of the JMAC prohibit the uptake of
contemporary medicines and emphasizes on spiritual healing.
This parental decision seriously compromises the children
physical, social and intellectual development (Interview 1 Health
Care Worker, Picture B of mother with a baby strapped at the back
below receive spiritual healing).
Study findings highlighted how male leadership enforces
their biblical perceptions on non uptake of contemporary
medicines on women and the children.
•The picture above shows the male leadership of the JMAC
delivering some teachings to children and women from the
church.
•The authority culturally vested in the males reinforces
gender disparities and denies the children and the female
congregants the right and decision to seek contemporary
medicines.
.
BACKGROUND
METHODOLOGY
Presentation of Findings
RESULTS (CONTD)
RECOMMENDATIONS AND
CONCLUSIONS
• Barriers to uptake need to be appropriately addressed.
• Interventions should cease to be confrontational and
should aim at transforming the gender disparities in the
JMAC.
• Need for appropriate health education for all community
members of the Domboshava.
• Fathers and JMAC leadership need to be targeted in
interventions .
Faith Based Healing
‘” The use of modern medicines is unholy and it is against the teaching of
the bible. It places man above God. Diseases are as a result of
disobedience to the laws of God. Therefore we including our children do
not take medicines brought by the whites. We rely on prayer and holy
water (muteuro) for our children health (In-depth Interview 5, Prophetess
“We strictly use holy water as per our religious belief. While hospitals use
medicines to cure, we keep our faith in the holy water‘
(Interview with Prophet, Herald 2010)
Old Wine, New Skins: Cultural Factors
The JMAC practices the culturally embedded polygamy.
Young girls are customarily forced to marry by religious
sanction outside their will.
The non use of contraceptives resulted in droves of children
within the polygamous affairs who lack double parental
upbringing as well as psycho- social support from the
fathers who abandon child rearing to their mothers
‘I have 45 children with 14 young wives. My youngest wife is 14 years
old. My wives are responsible for taking care of the children (In-depth
Interview Prophet Tarwirei, Zimbabwe Press.com )
Most of the children die in the hospitals and in their homes. So we are currently
doing an intervention targeting HIV positive children . We have given some
medications to some of the children and their health is improving.(Interview-

‘The procedures in the hospitals nowadays make impossible for our female
congregants (madzimai) to seek for medical assistance for delivering their
children there(read medical hospitals) . Imagine your wife lying naked and
being examined by a male medical doctor ? We cannot allow t hat...” (In-depth
