4. The social web: what has changed since 2006 Our first task was to identify the changes of the social web since 2006. We responded by using Mind42, a browser-based collaborative mind map We collaborated in creating our own mind map based on what has changed on the social web The following slides will show what we’ve done
8. Wikipedia – What Leads To Wikipedia’s Quality Our task was to answer the question – “What leads to Wikipedia’s quality?”, knowing that Wikipedia is also a collaborative project on the internet We had to learn how to create our own Wikipedia account and how to create our own original article on Wikipedia The Wikipedia article we’ve created was based on something we considered ourselves an “expert” on The article I created was about nHancer, an advanced control panel and profile editor for NVIDIA graphics cards
12. Are Web Technologies That Complicated? In this project, we needed to make another collaboration via the built-in Wiki on our Kalayaan class website We responded by collaborating on a Web Technologies Wiki and by enumerating some of the web technologies we know We identified what kind of web technologies are present in Web 2.0, and these web technologies involved web applications that feature information sharing and collaboration
16. Making Our First Facebook Application Our task was to create our very own Facebook application We were given a 5-minute tutorial on how to create a Facebook app by using a web server I wasn’t able to actually make a Facebook app because I had a difficult time understanding how to use a web server Due to this, I just used Facebook’s built-in application builder in order to create my own app The Facebook application I created was a chance app I also never used Facebook before, since I’m not a fan of social networking sites, so this was the first time I’ve used Facebook
21. Dealing With Newcomers & Encouraging Contribution We were assigned to answer the question, “What makes a social application viral?” After creating our first Facebook app, we were assigned to promote it within a period of one week while gathering daily data on how many users were using our application Promoting my app was hard, since it was the first time I used Facebook and I had to find friends and people to try my app Because my first attempted Facebook app was very lame and useless, I decided to create another app (a quiz app)
24. Encouraging Contribution (Project Day) After promoting our Facebook application and gathering daily data, we then had to “demonstrate” it We were assigned to use Google Docs in order to present and demonstrate our Facebook app We also had to answer the question, “What is special about your Facebook application?” in our Google Docs presentation
28. Wisdom of Crowds & Information Cascades In this project, we needed to participate in a debate on our Kalayaan class website The topic of the debate was about crowds being considered as “smart” and we had to choose to be FOR or AGAINST this subject We also needed to give a reference to our stand I chose to be AGAINST because I don’t believe that all crowds on the internet are smart and they cannot be trusted
32. The Web As A Social Network In this project, we were supposed to identify the ways by which the web can be considered as social We were asked if we could find a website which is not social I was surprised that I couldn’t think of a website which isn’t social, and I also couldn’t find one We responded by posting our answer and our ideas on our class website’s blog
35. The Social Web & Privacy Our ninth project was about our personal privacy on the internet We were asked how much personal information we were disclosing online We also had to Google ourselves and we had to respond to the question by giving our reaction based on the search results And finally, we had to describe and explain our privacy settings on Facebook Our response was written in another blog post in our class website
39. More Web Technologies Our task was to create our own timeline using the “Class Tool” The timeline was about the internet, and how it evolved since its popular birth in 1969 The timeline should also contain the Web’s evolving web technologies and tools We were also assigned to indicate the Web’s development from Web 1.0 to Web 3.0, and we had to incorporate our personal references into our timeline
