Portobello Project
Collaborative Community Design
Problem: How can we bring a new generation of shoppers into
the Portobello Market?
• aging demographic of shoppers and shopkeepers
• Changing from a culturally relevant local space to an item on a tourists checklist.
How does D6 create a space that is relevant to younger generations and valued by
the community as a social space?
A third space that created a lasting engagement with
users and is a resource to the local community.
Solution:
In the space of three hours we had over 550 passersby take
interest in our cultural probe, with around 10% of them
interacting and sharing their thoughts on the market.
Market Validation:
In the nearly .5 miles of market there is one single sitting
social area
Market Size:
Over 40,000 people visit Portobello Market every week.
Our small firm is more easily able to integrate
with the community, staying in touch with the
local market offices and having a subtle yet
visible presence in the market space.
Competitive Advantage:
Small community-sourced change committees, either
cherished by the community or distrusted by them.
