SABRE – Semi-automated Business Research Environment
Sabre is a system which is used by more than 350,000 travel agents globally and also it is
preferred by more than 400 airlines, 100,000 hotels, 25 car rental brands, 50 rail providers and 17 cruise
lines. The reason behind this huge amount of numbers is that the Sabre system enables companies to
search, price, book, and ticket travel services provided by airlines, hotels, car rental companies, rail
providers and tour operators. Hence, it is beneficial to save time and to get easier information from
many areas due to its relations.
American Airlines was facing a serious struggle before this system not in usage at the year of
1950s. The challenge was about to handle airline reservations quickly so before the foundation of SABRE,
the airline's system for booking flights was manual and harder to access the information. Furthermore, in
this manual system, there was a team of eight operators that rotate file with cards for every flight so
when a seat was booked, the system would place a mark and knew visually if it was full or not. When
there were not huge numbers of planes, the process was not all that slow. After the insufficiency of
system, it replaced with the card files in 1952. This new system composed of a single magnetic drum and
each memory location holding the number of seats which are left on a particular flight. The advantage of
using this system enables operators could look up information simultaneously with large numbers, so the
ticket agents could be told over the phone if a seat was available or not quicker than the previous
system.
Shortly, SABRE system is beneficial for travel agencies to quick response their passengers
whether the seat is available or not. Before this system it is harder to book a seat and it was taking more
time. It improves the strategic decision making by analyzing and tracking passenger movements and
yields. Also, better target the approach and include more compelling information when building business
cases for airlines.

Is it Possible to be a Successful Hijacking?

Is it Possible to be a Successful Hijacking?
D. B. Cooper is man who hijacked a Boeing 727 aircraft and he is still unidentified and the aircraft
which he was hijacked had the destinations between Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, in the
year of November 24, 1971. He was extorted $200,000 with today’s money it is equal to $1,170,000. The
reason behind this mystery is that the area where he parachuted was an uncertain place. Even an
extensive search and FBI examination, he has never been placed or identified.
This case is the only unsolved air piracy in American aviation history. The suspect purchased his
airline ticket using the alias Dan Cooper, but because of a news media miscommunication he became
known in popular lore as "D. B. Cooper". Many theories have been proposed by experts, reporters, and
amateur enthusiasts but still there is no exact identity or clear evidence. The discovery of a small cache
of some bills in 1980 triggered renewed interest but the great majority of the event is mystery. While FBI
investigators have stated from the beginning that Cooper probably did not survive his risky jump, the
agency maintains an active case file which has grown to more than 60 volumes and continues to solicit
creative ideas and new leads from the public.
The most attractive point in this hijacking is the mystery of D.B Cooper because still his real
identity is not found. Also, the most complex part is “How he estimates the landing time while using the
parachute.” Because when they search information about him, they couldn’t find any training about
parachuting. There are so many interesting events in D.B Cooper’s case but the reason behind this event
is that there is no security check in domestic flights at that years. Hence, the one big chance is the lack of
security so this hijacking named successful in history. Maybe all or some of the crew members are
relevant of D.B Cooper and this hijacking planned years ago because it is impossible to land alive without
parachute training and walk without captured by FBI. People don’t know even he is alive or dead. There
is no evidence since 1971. He hasn’t harmed anyone so he hasn’t planned impairing operation. Maybe
he only wants to announce his name or changed the security system by this way or he is already a
professional. The most important differences according to the other similar events are that the other
hijackings are solved and the identities are determined. Also, I guess that no one parachuted into an
uncertain place. Furthermore, also there are some copycat hijackings like Garrett Brock Trapnell, he
hijacked a TWA airliner en route from Los Angeles to New York City at the year of January 1972. He
demanded $306,800 in cash and after the aircraft landed at Kennedy Airport he was shot and wounded
by FBI agents before being arrested. Another copycat hijacking example is by Richard McCoy, he hijacked
a United Airlines 727-100 at the year of 1972 after it left Denver, Colorado and diverted it to San
Francisco. He obtained $500,000 and then bailed out over Utah with $500,000 in ransom money. He
landed safely, however he was arrested two days later. Hence, no one can be successful as D.B Cooper in
5
the area of not to be captured. Maybe they reached their aim in some other topic like grab attention or
act like D.B Cooper but this case is peerless.
To sum up, the meaning of successful is vary for everyone but D.B Copper named his name since
1971. Also, he is the only one who is not arrested and be a mystery in history. There are so many similar
events but in the end all the suspects arrested by police or have an identity. According to past years the
security checks are not enough so it is easier to hijack than today’s security. On the other hand, it is still
hard to parachute from aircraft without any training and success to not arrest.

When did the Terrorists Discover the Media Power?
At the year of September 1970, the event of Dawson’s Field and also known as Black September
was carried out by members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). The four jet
airliners which were connected with New York City and other for London hijacked then three aircraft
were forced to land at Dawson's Field which is desert near Zarka. By the end of the incident, one hijacker
had been killed and one injury reported. The hijacker who named Leila Khaled was arrested and the
other member of PFLP threaten that if they don’t set free her, they will operate another hijacking event.
Hence, she rescued from this situation and known as a famous name.
On 7 September 1970, the hijackers made a conference for 60 members of the media who had
made their way and about 125 hostages were transferred to Amman. On the other hand, the American,
Israeli, Swiss, and West German citizens were held on the planes and also Jewish passengers were held.
As groups of the hostage passengers and crew were assembled on the sand in front of the media. Sharif
mentioned that the goal of the hijackings was "to gain the release of all of our political prisoners jailed in
Israel in exchange for the hostages." This hijacking planned at the year of 1967 and after 5 years later
they applied. They were trying to find ways to get high impression. This plan was like domino pieces and
the first domino piece gone unsuccessful with the capture of Leila Khaled but remaining part was went
successfully as they capture the attention of public. Furthermore, this event is the American’s
introduction into the global terrorism because the three aircraft which were hijacked blown up in full
view of media cameras. Hence, terrorist had discovered the media due to the big attention. Terrorists
understood that they could reach their aims by media and grab interest.
Terrorists’ aims are not only confined to winning the attention of the masses. Another aim is to
publicize their political causes and explain their reasons. In other words, for terrorists, the media is a tool
which is beneficial to extend the power between them and fight against warfare. On the other hand,
media receives the attention of the public which is crucial for its existence and gets benefits from huge
audiences. Hence, media use the way about the public’s willingness to obtain information about terrorist
attacks and benefit from it. For this reason, there is a mutually beneficial relationship between terrorism
and media.
Shortly, we can say that terrorists and media has a mutual benefit to each other and they both
have same goals which are, recognition, and perhaps even a degree of respectability and legitimacy in
their various publics. Terrorist can announce their wants and their reasons via media and media use
these events to grab attention. Hence, for an example of this the first discovery of media power is at the
year of 1972 which named is Dawson’s Field hijackings. Furthermore, this was the first extensively
published hijacking by PFLP and the discovery of media’s power.

What Happened after Fidel Castro Release the Prisoners?
President Fidel Castro mentioned that Cuba has started to release prisoners from its jails and
suspects that is about to send them to join the boat people leaving the island for Florida. This would
immediately escalate the confrontation between Washington and Havana. President Castro might be
signaling that he is prepared a wholesale clearance of his prisons in order to force the US to have a
dialogue about the US embargo as well as immigration. He decided to empty his prisoners and mental
hospitals. However, many people not pleased with this forced change due to emotional drive.
The boats were waiting at the port of Mariel west of Havana for 125,000 Cuban refugees but the
refugees were not political prisoners, they were criminals such as sexual assaults, fights, stabbing and
mental patients. Hence, this circumstance promoted number of the homesick Cubans to hijack. The boat
lift prompted a number of the homesick Cuban hijackings. Each year around Christmas time, notices
were sent to airplane terminals reminding security personnel that there would be a more serious danger
of hijackings amid the Christmas season. The Cubans seemed to favor a bottle of flammable liquid as a
weapon and emphasis was placed on that factor during pre-departure screening. Amid May, June and
the three weeks of July of that year, eight U.S. flights had been hijacked to Cuba. The commercials were
an unusual approach to what had become a serious problem. Hijacking an aircraft appeals political and
personal gain as a dramatic method of enforcing their demands.
Shortly, due to political issues 125,000 Cubans who have mental health problem were exoduses
from Cuba to U.S made hijackings. The reason behind this event is emotional drive to return to their
relatives like family and friends. They wanted to stay in homeland so they hijacked to return Cuba in the
year of 1980s.
