This senior living facility design focuses on engagement and purposeful interactions for residents with dementia. The floor plan incorporates small activity nodes throughout for residents to participate in meaningful exchanges. Each area will employ and engage residents in a tranquil environment without overstimulation. The design aims to incorporate the local community into residents' daily lives.
2. T
he design for this space will be based off of the qualities of light. Light cannot by
itself be seen, but it enables everything to be seen. It cannot be tasted, touched,
smelled, or heard, but it is a powerful aspect of life. It illuminates and creates shapes
and forms, and can manipulate space like nothing else can. The design for Godiva Concept
will utilize these aspects of light, and incorporate its mysterious yet brilliant qualities.
Another big inspiration for this space is the paintings of Mark Lawrence, which are very
geometric and reflective.
Mark Lawrence’s paintings had a large influence on the floor plan, as well as the shapes
and forms of the fixtures and other elements in the design. The qualities of light can be
experienced in the material choices, many of which have translucent qualities.

This Project was designed for a PAVE student competition where 1000 square feet was
given to design a Godiva store suitable in any location. The space incorporated a cash
wrap, theatre area, cafe, and a display area. Also part of the competition was creating an
original display case to house the chocolate.

The concept for this design focuses on the zipper; each
part representing a different space. It brings people in to
the space, connects and disconnects them in different DN
areas, and creates the flow of circulation. DN

8. Lighting for the Interior
wall wash diffused fluorescent lighting reflective mirrors and beads
This assignment focused on creating a light box showcasing three
different types of lighting. There is a wall wash on either side of the
floor plane, diffused lighting on the back, and fiber optic threads with
beads on the end hanging from the ceiling.
The drawings on the facing page were part of the technical design
portion of the class, and consisted of a light map, RCP, and Electrical
plan for the space in our collaborative studio.

Engaging the residents to participate in meaningful interactions
with each other through the utilization of small activity nodes
within the facilities. The residents will be able to have purposeful
exchanges with each other as well as visitors, and the
community will be incorporated into their daily lives. Each area
will employ the residents while not overstimulating them, and will
be tranquil and soothing.
