Portable Design's proposed new office space will be located in the One North Dearborn building in Chicago. The 49,917 square foot space will include areas for receiving guests, displaying and selling furniture, employee lounges, cafes, gathering spaces, and work areas on three floors. Elements like a bridge, image wall, and yurts throughout the space are intended to spark creativity and provide a nature-inspired experience for employees that reflects the company's values.
This design uses a recurring motif of sinuous curves and spheres to create a fluid space in which all the elements – flooring, planting, seating – are linked by this common theme.
A 2.4m diameter Indian sandstone circular patio located in the top right corner of the space forms the main dining/seating area. From this area a series of curved pathways, all constructed from hoggin (self-binding aggregate) edged with Indian sandstone setts, emanate like tendrils around the space. One pathway arcs towards the garden gate, broadening as it does so, while another snakes down the centre of the space to join a second, smaller sandstone patio directly outside the left hand patio doors. A third path sweeps down the right side of the garden, spiralling past the right hand patio doors to terminate in an eye-catching stainless steel sphere water feature.
The last path will encircle the main focal point of the garden: a magnificent, visually arresting rotating orb mini-office/lounger. This structure has a sculptural timber framework, and is finished in stainless steel and chrome. The interior contains a table and soft seating. The table retracts, allowing the space to be laid out as a single day bed arrangement as required.
An external weatherproof canopy provides additional shelter encloses the open entrance from the elements.
Sandstone globes and stainless steel spheres are scattered throughout the planting beds continue the spherical theme.
The planting scheme also echoes the curved theme, featuring architectural box balls and tall sensual Allium. A mixture of swaying grasses and prairie flowers provide an evergreen backdrop and seasonal colour.

Flooring throughout this space was in rectangular dark slate tiles laid in a stretcher bond pattern to match the interior of the house. The main section of the garden benefits from a variety of bespoke features designed to make maximum use of the space. A major focus of the garden is a water feature consisting of a sunken rectangular pool bisecting the space. Deep and wide enough to allow the client to add fish at a later date, this pool is topped with removable walk-over grating and fed from the left side by a stainless steel water blade installed into the front of a decorative tower constructed from yellow stock brick, railway sleepers, coloured perspex and slate.
Seating in the garden is provided by two large ‘sofas’ constructed from chunky railway sleepers, positioned to face each other across the water feature rill. The sofas are complemented by a matching coffee-style table straddling the rill between them. Large (2 metre clear stem) cordylines planted in the ground at either end of each sofa, frame the seating to give the area a sense of privacy and seclusion.
To the right of the seating area and opposite the stainless sleet blade, there is a bespoke barbecue/fireplace. Constructed from yellow stock brick and utilising the existing stone lintel, this barbeque features two separate cooking areas with space between for a firepit.
The main area of the garden is screened from the remainder of the space by a tall, wide ‘shelving unit’ screen. Constructed from railway sleepers, this structure features individual alcoves which have been filled with a variety of decorative materials, perspex screens and ornamentation. Directly in front of this there is a flush level herb bed.
Beyond the shelving unit screen is the second, child-friendly section of the space. This comprises a rectangular section of artificial lawn edged by a slate paved pathway, with the playhouse nestled within the centre of a planting bed at the end of the garden.
Planting in the second section of the garden includes stepover fruit trees down either side, back planted by climbers. In addition, an Acer and a Mimosa were planted around the children’s playhouse. The pathway around the lawn offers the clients opportunity to place planted pots at a later date if required.
Climbers conceal the existing fence on the left hand side, with a bespoke screen (approximately 6 metres long) comprising tall timber posts joined with stainless steel tension wire and decorated with small panels of coloured perspex was erected above the top of the fence to break up the view of the buildings to the left.

We believe physical environments affect human behaviour
Interior design should always take its cue from the behaviour an organisation aspires to embrace. Among other elements, employee creativity and productivity can inform this approach.
Many mechanisms affect human behaviour and may favourably be employed in the design of the physical environment. When designing spaces and solutions GrapeDesign divide these elements into subcategories of design, acoustics, colours, materials, shapes, light, sound and even scent.

"Audio Branding. Brands, Sound and Communication" is the first international compilation on the topic of Audio Branding. The articles in this book deal with functions of sound, the basics and principles of brand communication and Audio Branding, multi-sensory aspects of brand communication and legal matters concerning sound marks, among others. In case studies on projects with international brands, leading experts provide insight into what Audio Branding actually means in practice. This compilation is based on the German publication Audio-Branding that was released in 2007.
Audio Branding, also known as Sound Branding or Sonic Branding, describes brand communication through sound, using brand soundelements like an audio logo, a brand song or a brand voice. So far, brands have spent a lot of time and money on visual branding while sound hasn't been treated as a brand element that needs to be designed. The emerging of new media and devices with built-in audio delivery, such as podcasts, audiobooks, smartphones, expands the opportunities for Audio Branding but also increases the risks of causing noise pollution and a sonic mess. Consequently, the use of sound in brand communication demands careful attention.

FORM, FUNCTION, Design with a view
This small country home got a complete makeover, as our desire was to have one large open area incorporating casual and formal dining in a contemporary classic setting, but enhancing the scenic views and natural lighting. Our passion of wines, exotic coffees, fine dining and entertaining was a must when designing the space. The light cabinetry, clean lines and large island with multiple heights create a monochromatic yet extremely efficient and seamless design. Adding extra windows and featuring the wall with a timeless natural stone tile and using natural walnut accentuating and balancing the warmth of a cold climatic atmosphere make the most of this impressive combination. Unique lighting highlighting treasures and textures of materials brings an overall cohesion to a sleek and multi functional cozy environment.

Who We Are:
Our company is deeply rooted in its history. Since the very founding of the company in 1965 by Emmett
Fitzgerald proposed our current work ethic of innovation in furniture design, which is a reflection of our
company overall.
What We Believe:
Modernity is a design aesthetic that we portray in all of our furniture designs, as we believe in the
honesty of materials and lack of ornamentation. Specifically, all Portable designs utilize natural
materials, such as rattan, bamboo, woven peel, solid teak, laced rawhide, and Oriental hardwoods.
Each carefully designed piece is meant to be convertible from porch furniture to living room furniture.
Design: Our relationship with Designers in the field of Interior Design has helped aid in
the progress of our creativity. They give our people a new insight to what furniture
design can be.
Innovation: Often not the design intent, innovation has been a part of Portable’s
history. Our research and willingness to meet our customer’s needs drives our
designs to change shape. We believe in taking risks and encourage each member of
our design team to experiment with materials, and processes to design solutions to
solve each problem given to them.
Operational Excellence: The client’s needs are of great concern to us, as we try to
maintain and organize our business. Our customers are not only concerned with
manufacturing, delivery, instillation, and ongoing service; they are concerned with our
reliability and their relationship with Portable. From our dealers, to our manufacturers,
to our vendors, each and every division of our company puts the customer first.
CLIENT
What We Do:
We study living environments and design and deliver products to make these spaces function better.
Where We Are:
Our furniture is available to homeowners and companies worldwide. Our international retail
store locations include both Paris and London. In the United States, we have retail store
locations in Washington DC, Michigan, and New York, just to name a few. Our newest
location is opening in Chicago, Illinois on Dearborn Street. Our trade showrooms are only
open to design professionals, although the public is welcome to browse. These include
showrooms in California, where our headquarters is located, New York, Illinois, and
Washington.
