This document summarizes Pope Paul VI's 1967 encyclical Populorum Progressio, which addresses the need for international development and economic justice. The Pope calls for urgent action to promote development through economic planning, aid to developing nations, and equity in trade relations. He argues that development must respect human dignity and potential, not just economic growth. True development and peace require global solidarity and collaboration and overcoming injustice and inequality between nations.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Editor's Notes
Increasing Disparity between the rich and poor nations.
The Rich nations are getting richer while the poor nations are in slow pace of development and some are exploited.
Populorum Progressio is one of the first Social Encyclicals of the Church.
Pope Paul Vi directly criticize the irregularities and exploitations done by rich capitalists, and the wide scope of “Imperialism” of rich countries to the inferior ones.
Imperialism is the policy of seeking to extend the power, dominion, or territories of a nation, whether direct (conquest) or indirect (colonialism).
Human Aspirations – matters that human seeks to attain.
Structural Injustice – systems of injustice (economic stark or desolation, imperialism, etc.)
Church and Development – role of the Church in the economic issues and its moral definition of authentic development
New Humanism – the moral importance of human interests and values
Peace – as named as true Development
1: freedom from misery; food security; responsibility without oppression; and better educstion.
2: ‘means inherited from the past’ are the countermeasures and solutions done to diminish the problems of human development.
3: social unrests and turmoils are affecting not only locally but globally.
4: many institutions are laxed or stagnant to their status, making their actions obsolete and inneffective.
1: the Church highly supports human progress as based on the Christ’s teachings.
2: The Church has its say to different human aspects.
3: One sign of God’s Kingdom is the integral development of human person.
4: Development is holistic and not fragmental in nature.
5: Every human beings has the right and responsibility of attaining authentic development.
6: Everyone is vital.
7: Work does not speak totally of human dignity but the person himself.
8: Avarice makes the person narrow in understanding total development. True development is communal.
9: Values and virtues are vital components of full and authentic development.
1: God intends the earth and its goods for use by everyone; all other rights must subordinated to this principle.
Private Property is not an absolute and unconditional right, but must be exercised for the common good. The State shall ensure this and common good sometimes requires exporpriation (depossession or confiscation).
2: Industry is necessary for economic growth and progress .
3: Too many people are suffering; disparity grows exponentially. Recourse to violence, revolutions, are grave temptations.
4: Public programs are necessary. Authorities should stimulate authentic economic activity. Economic growth depends on social progress.
2: Everyone is called to respond to these problems (to be in solidarity) as our aid for the poor.
3 & 4: First World Countries should act in solitude and fraternal concern with poor nations. Richness is seen in giving and sharing, not in greed.
5: Pope Paul VI gave recognition of organizations or institutions that seeks to help poor nations. But still the call of collaboration is for everyone.
6: Excrutiating consumption and expenditures are discouraged (particularly to the government) as empathy to our poor brethren and sustainability for the future.
1: Trade relations are of importance due to its direct benefit to the economy of nations. That is why imbalanced relations to trade is highly condemned.
The principle of supply and demand are criminalized by rich nations to gain more profit than their partner nations.
2: Free trade is used as means of greed of rich nations to poor nations especially to those country who has vast natural resources. Therefore, the encyclical reminds every nation to ponder their intention or cause.
4: Contracts between nations, as far as equity is concerned must be recognized at all times.
6: Bilaterality is important between contracting nations.
7: Excessive patriotism and racism diminish shared relations.
1: Indifference must be overcome.
3: Those businessmen are called to help the governments in planning true development.
