Crypto-Polyfoil is a proposed system that separates classified and unclassified information into two formats. The core document would contain an overview for general audiences, while supplementary encrypted Polyfoils could be decrypted by those with clearance to access classified details. This addresses the problem that fully encrypting or heavily redacting documents makes them unusable by some audiences. Polyfoils allow separation of information streams so that both general and secure audiences can access appropriate content without compromising security or usability.

3. Crypto-Polyfoil
Cryptographic systems exist that people can't crack, at least
with-out 1000s of hours of massive processing. Their weak link
is people must use them correctly. To do so impacts productivity.
If a document that contains classified content reaches a general
audience, it must be heavily redacted. Then those with clear-
ance can't read what they should. If it's completely encrypted,
those without clearance can't read what they should.
Decryption takes time. Repeated key entry, the most secure
method, is time and attention consuming. Ordinary users object.
Segregate encrypted data from core content, on a Polyfoil, and
it's in supplemental position. Those with security decrypt as far
as they wish, while the core document contains an overview
that is sufficient and satisfactorily formatted for ordinary users.
The published document has an untouched linear core and
completely encrypted Polyfoils. Since Polyfoils are separate
from a document, they split an audience. A Polyfoil with content
that egresses from a core puts the decryption burdern where it
belongs, on the reader with security clearance.
