Abstract: The production of high-quality open textbooks requires the collaboration of different contributors. This work conducts a comparative analysis of the six different collaborative platforms for the production of books. To be able to compare the platforms, several dimensions extracted from literature of collaborative writing and the requirements associated with open textbooks are described and used. As conclusion of the study, it is clear that Connexions is currently the best option for the collaborative production of open textbooks although it lacks some basic functionality. This work recommend the creation of a new breed of platforms that better support the producers of open textbooks that inherit all the successful capabilities of the current generation.

The design architecture is a component-based architecture using the Zope3 CA framework. There are components to integrate the OAI protocol in order exchange metadata among applications, to explicitly create relations among documents allocated in different computational node. Also the Octpay3 framework manages cartographic document and RDF/RDFS serialization of documents and content types. In the rest of the paper we describe the component architecture adopted, wit special attention to the functionalities and techniques used to overcome the Zope/Plone environment. Next, the Octpay Configuration Markup Language (OCML) is described together some example of its usage to described the document structure, the component description. OCML allows to personalize the managed contents, to easily extend the environment and to establish relations among documents. The paper describes also the set up used to test it with cultural heritage contents. We developed the napolibniculturali.it network of cultural heritage knowledge providers. To each provider the Octapy3 environment provide them with a set of tools, for example, to implement the cartographic interface for contents mediation, to build intermuseum virtual collections, stressing out either the effective visit or the conceptual features. napolibeniculturali.it is sponsored and used by the Direzione Regionale per i Beni Culturali e Paesaggistici della Campania to promote knowledge about cultural heritage goods of Campania. Currently this community is built of about 50 information node providers, and it interoperates with the Italian cultural heritage portal managed by the Italian Ministers of Cultural Heritage
Annotated Bibliographical Reference Corpora In Digital Humanities
This document describes the creation of new bibliographical reference corpora in digital humanities. It presents three corpora constructed of references from Revues.org, a French online journal platform. The first corpus contains references in bibliographies and is relatively simple. The second contains references in footnotes, which are less structured. The third contains partial references in article bodies, which are the most difficult to annotate. The corpora were manually annotated using TEI tags to label fields like authors, titles, dates. This will provide a valuable resource for natural language processing research on bibliographical reference annotation.

Our goal is to enable easy discovery of explicit and latent patterns that can reveal high-impact research areas, the dynamics of scholarly collaboration, and expertise of faculty and researchers. We describe VIZ-VIVO, an extension for the VIVO framework that enables end-user exploration of a scholarly knowledge-base through a configurable set of data-driven visualizations. Unlike systems that provide web pages of researcher profiles using lists and directory-style metaphors, our work explores the power of visual metaphors for navigating a rich semantic network of scholarly data modeled with the VIVO-ISF ontology. We produce dynamic web pages using D3 visualizations and bridge the user experience layer with the underlying semantic triple-store layer. Our selection of visual metaphors enables end users to start with the big picture of scholarship and navigate to individuals faculty and researchers within a macro visual context. The D3-enabled interactive environment can guide the user through a sea of scholarly data depending on the questions the user wishes to answer. In this paper, we discuss our process for selection, design, and development of an initial set of visualizations as well as our approach to the underlying technical architecture. By engaging an initial set of pilot partners we are evaluating the use of these data-driven visualizations by multiple stakeholders, including faculty, students, librarians, administrators, and the public.
Creating abstractions from scientific workflows: PhD symposium 2015

A new project of CUL is Scholars@Cornell, a data and visualization service built upon VIVO’s semantic, linked data knowledge-base that represents the record of scholarship produced by Cornell faculty and researchers. While adhering to the VIVO ontology, our work on Scholars@Cornell helps move VIVO forward in the technology areas that require a looser coupling of backend and frontend technologies. One key question we set out to answer was “how can visual mediation help users navigate the rich semantic data that represent the scholarship data recorded in VIVO knowledge-base?” Can visualizations be used to make the content more consumable and answer the questions that cannot easily be answered by browsing list views.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code Analysis
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.
