Polar bears have been sighted in Iceland since the 1960s, with increasing frequency in recent decades. Between 1963 and 2008, around 16 polar bears were observed or found dead in Iceland. Most were shot by local residents when the bears came too close to shore or inhabited areas. Polar bears are occasional visitors to Iceland due to sea ice conditions, with more sightings occurring when Arctic sea ice is at its minimum extent.
