POETRY – A Rendezvous Over Kpekedu By Bai T. Moore
    1. Beneath a sea of amber clouds
    2. That Saturday around half-past five
    3. Was just the kind of setting
    4. ‘Gainst which we left the Foya Field
    5. To keep our rendezvous with death
    6. Above the hills of Kpekedu.
    7. There was nothing unusual
    8. When Woods, McLaren, me and Gargeor
    9. Taxied down the field
    10. For a hop we thought—to Voinjama
    11. Just fifteedn minutes flight.
    12. when we were-half an-hour gone
    13. And no Voinjama in sight
    14. Emotions rose and fell,
    15. Any layman could conjecture
    16. We were destined for a rendezvous
    17. With death over Kpekedu hills.
    18. What followed threreafter
    19. When the pilot said, “We’re lost
    20. And the compass does not work,”
    21. Was an underscribable drama
    22. With our rendezvous with death
    23. The night came like a monster,
    24. A fierce and gruesome creature
    25. And engulfed the helpless Piper Cub
    26. With four men trapped aboard,
    27. Devoid of any likely chance
    28. Save just sufficient gas,
    29. To get closer to God.
    30. Aimlessly we circled
    31. On that moonless Saturday night
    32. Like a mango fly without a head
    33. To keep our rendezvous with death.
    34. Down below in scattered hamlets
    35. Tiny lights like fire bugs
    36. Flickered to and fro,
    37. And curious villagers watched in awe
    38. Four souls in agony lost
    39. Without a guiding compass
    40. Except the hands of God.
    41. As hell would soon break loose
    42. And the end just seconds ahead
    43. We all in unison cried, “O Lord!
    44. Our sould are in thy hands.”
    45. We heard a hissing sould – pop-pop-pop-!
    46. An agonizing signal,
    47. That the end had finally come.
    48. The gas gavbe out near Ngokuma
49. And BANG! Crashed our plane below
      50. In the middle of a trackless jungle,
      51. We’d kept our rendezvous with death
      52. Above the hills of Kpekedu.
      53. Throughout that uninviting night
      54. Our dazed and broken bodies bled
      55. And moaned for any kind of help
      56. Admist the ghostly wreck.
      57. While Kissi tribesmen cut through jungles
      58. In an effort to render aid
      59. Death had snatched his victim.
