The document is a Portuguese translation of Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven". It describes a man sitting alone late at night who hears tapping at his chamber door. When he opens the door, he finds nothing there. He then hears more tapping and opens his window, where a large black raven flies in and perches above his door. When the man asks the raven its name, it replies only "Nevermore".

Eagerly12 I wished the morrow; —vainly I had sought13 to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow—sorrow for the lost Lenore—
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore—
Nameless14 here for evermore.

That I scarce20 was sure I heard you” —here I opened wide the door—
Darkness there and nothing more.

And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, “Lenore?”
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, “Lenore!”—
Merely this and nothing more.

Soon again I heard a tapping something louder than before.
“Surely”, said I, “surely that is something at my window lattice26;
Let me see, then, what thereat is and this mystery explore
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore;
Tis the wind and nothing more”.

Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Nights Plutonian shore!”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore”.

For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being

With such name as Nevermore.

Of Never nevermore.”
