Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington employs over 4,300 people across 35 buildings to conduct research in energy, the environment, and national security. In 2015, the lab contracted with Magnum Energy Solutions to install a wireless energy management system using sensors to monitor occupancy, temperature, and other data points. This information is transmitted to gateways and then to the existing building automation system to more efficiently control lighting, heating, and cooling based on occupancy and space conditions. The goal is to help the Department of Energy reduce energy consumption at the lab by using next-generation technologies, according to Mike Giorgi, CEO of Magnum Energy Solutions.
