Ripley's: oltre i limiti dell'immaginazioneMarco Tirelli
Cos’altro ancora potresti chiedere?

Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

iconoclasti, Joseph He-

Londra alternativa che si aggre-
ga nell’area fra l’High Street e la
Chalk Farm Road di Camden Town
ci avrebbe forse turbato con le sue
atmosfere a dir poco inquietanti.
inorriditi turisti.
Camden Town, concentrazione di
luoghi ruggenti come il Camden
Passage, lo Stables Yard, il Lock
Village, il Buck Street e l’Inverness
Street Market, oltre allo psichede-
lico Electric Ballroom, è divenuta
una meta obbligata dei turisti di
tutto il mondo. E non è un caso
che, data la crescente attrattività
del quartiere, vi abbiano trovato
ospitalità anche le “più tranquil-
lizzanti” catene come Kentucky
Fried Chicken, McDonald’s, Burger
King e (più recentemente) persino
il nostro Rossopomodoro.
“Culture jammers are not the first

Piaccia o no ai pu-
risti, teorici dell’accademia, siamo
di fronte a uno shopping center per
antonomasia, a un posto bizzarro
fin che si vuole, astratto dalle re-
gole manualistiche, ma pur sempre
un luogo commerciale molto lucra-
tivo da cui trarre esempio.
Sorto da un piccolo mercato ar-
tigianale nel pieno dei travaglia-
ti anni ’70, oggi vi approdano
in media 100.000 visitatori ogni
weekend. Sotto la sua egida corale
si raccolgono molteplici e variega-
te realtà, tutte operanti con sponta-
nea, efficacissima sinergia.
mente vietato fotografare.
Ma passiamo a decodificare il luo-
go con ordine.
usati quanto ricercati, spesso rari.
Il Passage, invece, induce in tenta-
zione i “nouveaux riches” con cata-
ste di manufatti esotici dal dubbio
valore artistico, ma dal prezzo qua-
si sicuramente gonfiato. E poi c’è lo
Stables Yard (stalle accuratamente
ristrutturate) con le sue sculture
futuriste, i suoi cavalli di bronzo
e le loro teste over-size sparse qua
e là fra le costruzioni e le mura
in mattoni che in origine delimi-
tavano l’area.
tocorrenti cyberpunk. Chi è invece
alla ricerca di una notte votata alla
massima trasgressività in una cit-
tà dove i pub ancora chiudono per
tradizione alle 23, può perdersi tra
l’Electric Ballroom, l’Underworld
o il Dingwalls.
In generale, possiamo dire che vi
sono almeno due modi per inter-
pretare questo luogo: quello del
turista assetato di stranezze da
raccontare e quello (davvero lon-
dinese) di chi vive intimamente la
distinzione tra il gusto elitario di
una società nobiliare e il “cultural
slumming” fra i ceti popolari, vale
a dire il contrasto sempiterno tra le
raffinatezze di Fortnum & Mason e
la miscellanea kitsch o tacky degli
Stables, appunto.
Camden Market, insomma, costi-
tuisce un microcosmo di oltre 700

del profitto e del marketing. Certo,
le premesse culturali e identitarie
di questa melting pot di subcultu-
re furono spontanee e genuine: le
molte impronte punk-rock, cyber-
goth, fetish ecc. hanno radici pro-
fonde, ma queste estetiche post
moderne che (secondo gli studiosi
del fenomeno) associano tra i tan-
ti stilemi il “Raver britannico”, il
“Nyc dancekid look” con uno spin
“Freak Show” e molto altro ancora,
confluiscono in uno stile citazioni-
atomica, fanno deflagrare i forti
cromatismi delle loro facciate fora-
te da cavernosi magazzini o ancora
gli sgabelli-scooter all’aperto dove
consumare fast food e birra stout.
Lo rivela, ulteriormente, la colos-
sale statua del guerriero tribale
fantasy che sorveglia l’ingresso del
ristorante etnico Shaka Zulu o l’ap-
parente aggregato autopoietico del-
le tante baracchine che distribui-
scono cibi strani e (per noi) dubbi
o un impensabile assortimento di
paccottiglie.
In altre parole, clubby, hippy o
grungy sono tutti ingredienti sele-
zionati che concorrono non solo ad
amalgamare, ma soprattutto a esal-
tare la filosofia e l’unicità d’insie-
me da cui discende la sorprenden-
te forza gravitazionale del Camden
Market. Ecco allora che, dopo tanto
parlare di lifestyle shopping center,
se ne ricava un esempio versatile e
tanto votato all’ambiguità da risul-
tare inimitabile. Nel flusso multi-
forme di visitatori che si aggirano
fra percorsi, drappeggi e memora-
bilia di ogni genere, convergono
numerose e distinte identità, tut-
tavia accomunate dalla percezione
di un luogo mitico e folkloristico,
per certi versi, ultraesotico e sicu-
ramente in perenne trasformazio-
ne. C’è chi dice che non si possa
realmente coglierne lo spirito sen-
za rovistare almeno una volta fra
i knick-knack ammucchiati sui
bancali di questi mercati. Tuttavia
i suoi anfratti, le ambientazioni
ispirate dai dettami della contro-
cultura anticonsumistica, l’esibi-
zione di prodotti artigianali (ma
spesso anche seriali o vintage,
come i Burberry e gli Aquascutum
usati), l’integrazione di una food
court etnica, macrobiotica, eco-
compatibile, non si discostano in
ultima analisi dalla logica dei ser-
vizi di altre più esplicite e blasona-
te “cattedrali dello shopping”. Ne
In
conclusione, questo mondo caotico
che aspira a essere perennemente
in controtendenza sembra rispon-
dere al medesimo pragmatico pa-
radigma: la massimizzazione di
un profitto ben più interessante di
quello offerto dall’ennesimo fran-
chising nell’ennesimo periferico
shopping mall.
