The Wright brothers invented the airplane in 1903 when they conducted the first successful controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight. An airplane is defined as a fixed-wing aircraft that is powered by propellers or jets. Some interesting facts about airplanes include that turbulence and lightning cannot cause a plane to crash, and that the risk of dying while flying is less than the risk of dying while walking on the street. Pilots undergo rigorous annual testing to ensure safe air travel.
