- 2. Securing my Placement Applied and offered an interview through Handshake Attended an in person interview Offered the position and asked to start ASAP Started 8th June 2022, finished 8th September 2023
- 3. About Intertek Global company with over 40,000 employees in over 1000 laboratories worldwide Provides a huge portfolio of testing options Certifies products as meeting safety standards My site was mostly involved with Rolls-Royce standards
- 4. My Duties Metallurgical Laboratory Technician Metallurgical preparation Assessment of samples Reporting of results Mostly jet engine parts Internal and external customers Additional duties Work as part of the Health & Safety team Maintain equipment Communicate with customers Calibration checks
- 6. Etching June 2022-Sept 2023 Different chemical etches must be used for specific metals/alloys Etches must be remade often Exotic etches were often created -Murakami etch, KMnO4, HF etches Very difficult to etch samples perfectly
- 7. Hardness Assessments Macro and Micro testers have different applications Used to assess heat treatment or welds Microhardness tester can run automatically Jun 2022-Oct 2022
- 8. XRD Analysis Oct 2022-Feb 2023 Used to measure strain that causes residual stresses by calculating d-spacing Electropolishing is used to remove material Analysed machined engine parts to determine depth of machine induced hardening
- 9. SEM Analysis Feb 2023-Aug 2023 Undertake analysis at extreme magnification Able to perform EDS measurements for element identification Gained experience on 4 different SEMs Did an interesting job on hafnium inclusions involving a CT scanner Signed off to use them independently

Skills Gained Networking Constant communication with customers built useful connections Time management Complete multiple concurrent projects to meet deadlines Balance University work with travelling 2 hours per day to a 9-5 job Working in a professional lab environment Able to collaborate and communicate with colleagues in different disciplines effectively Learned how to use new software Lots of excel skills

Summary Completion of this placement year has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life Awarded a full time contract after University Obtained an idea about the area of science I would like to pursue Made many new friends I would advise moving to the same city that your placement is located in!

- Very easy to use and submit applications on handshake Started pretty much as soon as i was done with uni
- Role was metallurgical lab technician -prep -assessment -reporting Lots of additional duties that i picked up
- -First thing I got taught -Doing this alongside other duties for the whole year -small and large cutting machines -automatic and manual mounting -most samples were smaller and easier than this one
- -taught this alongside prep, final stage in all preps -due to many different metals, had to use different etches -had to remake etches almost daily
- -placed in different departments for periods of time over my placement -First one was hardness testing for heat treatment and welds -uses a diamond to press into the metal -Had to prep samples first and then test them Macro, 10-30kg Micro, 100g-2kg Micro does automatic so thousands of indents can be done overnight
- After that, i was placed in the XRD department -There for 5 months quality tested machined titanium parts -Very interesting to apply the theory taught my alex in 2nd year -used electropolishing to remove material and analyse deeper into the material -signed off to use them on my own
- After XRD I was placed into SEM department -Had 4 different SEMs -Energy dispersive spectroscopy to identify elements, for inclusions -able to perform analysis on my own
- -Networking, constantly chatting to customers within rolls royce and became very familiar, got specifically given jobs by customers due to my past performance -Always had more than one job on at the same time so had to be very time efficient -Had to get the train to derby every day and cycling either side of the train which was very difficult -professional lab environment was good for my independent skills
- I really recommend doing a placement i thought it was amazing Learned an incredible amount Been offered a full time job and a part time job during final year I would not recommend commuting to a different city it was very difficult
