“We started CSWS in 2009 to mixed reception. Some people in Provo really liked us,
some people in Provo really hated us, but no one outside of Provo knew anything about us
at all. In an attempt to branch beyond Utah Valley we reached out to a local company
called Orabrush that was having some viral success on YouTube at the time, and offered to
write them a rap song about their product. They liked it and ended up bringing me to the
first annual Vidcon where I was introduced to the (then very small) ecosystem of people
making a living off ad revenue from YouTube. The most significant of whom happened to
be the videographer for Orabrush, and was my de facto roommate for the weekend,
Devin Graham (DevinSupertramp).
He hadn't started his channel yet, but after a weekend of drinking the YouTube koolaid,
we decided to test it out with a video concept that had recently worked well for Danny
Macaskill and Band of Horses. Devin would shoot an extreme sports video with premium
visuals, and we would provide the soundtrack. The video would serve not only as an a
dvertisement for our song, and a viral success for Devin, but ultimately a template for the
licensing work I've now done with hundreds of YouTube channels.
To date, CSWS has over 300 Million plays on YouTube and earns a consistent residual
income that totals over $250k since 2011. UseMySongs is an extension of that model, that
hopes to pair emerging artists with YouTubers that can generate viral traffic for them, and
YouTubers with musicians that can immediately increase the production quality of their
videos.”
