Title : CFD analysis on solar parabolic dish

Description : Due to the impact of energy usage on the environment and the increase in the price of
fossil fuel, people must be encouraged to use renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind power,
hydraulic energy, geothermal energy and biomass energy.
Concentrated solar thermal (CST) power has been used for years to help supply power to certain
energy markets and has proven to be fairly successful. Unfortunately the high prices of these solar
technologies have prohibited them from really making a large impact on the world's energy scene. This
study analyzes the structural, thermal, and CFD performance of a parabolic dish concept which could be
the basis for large scale commercial concentrated solar thermal electricity. Finite element method (FEM)
software ANSYS 14 was used to simulate the structural integrity and thermal property of the dish which
is modeled with varying metallic properties under different wind loading conditions. Computational Fluid
Dynamics (CFD) was done to simulate using finite volume method with thermal performance of the dish
at two different wind velocities.Simulations predict the dish to have minimal deflections in 30mph
operation wind loading condition. The thermal analysis of three different dish materials such as alloys of
aluminium, copper and stainless steel showed that copper has highest heat flux.
