2. PIPE SUPPORTS
Pipe Supports are most important part of Piping system, just
as a SIM card in a Mobile Phone.
Pipe Supports should be as simple as conditions allow.
Stock Items such as Hangers, tie-rod, clamps, etc, are used,
where practicable, especially for Piping to be supported from
Top.
To support Piping from bottom, supports are usually made to
suit from plate stock, pipe and pieces of structural steel.
Supports for lines smaller then 2” and non-critical lines are
often FIELD FABRICATED.
3. FUNCTIONS OF PIPE SUPPORTS
To carry the weight of the Piping filled with Process fluids and
Insulation if used.
To ensure that the material from which the pipe is made is not
stressed beyond the safe limit.
To allow for draining. Holdup of liquid can occur due to pipes
sagging between supports. Complete draining is ensured by
making adjacent support adequately tilt the Pipe (Slop)
To permit thermal expansion and contraction of the piping
under “Stress on Piping”
To withstand and dampen vibrational forces applied to the
piping by compressors, pumps, etc.
4. STANDARD PIPE SUPPORTS

(Ref. spec : 25194-3PS-PL-019 Pipe Supports Standard)
GUIDE
A means of allowing a Pipe to move along its length
(longitudinal), but not sideways (lateral).
Pipe Guide (G9)
Shoe Guide – for Pipe Sizes 2” to 4” (SG1)
Shoe Guide – for Pipe Sizes 6” to 24” (SG2)
Saddle Guide – for Pipe Sizes 30” to 114” (SG2A)

SHOE (S1 , S2, S3)
A metal piece attached to the underside of a Pipe which
rest on supporting steel.
Primarily used to reduce wear from sliding for lines
subjected to movement.
Permits insulation to be applied to pipe.
Shoes may be used with Guide.
SADDLE (S11)
A welded attachment for Pipe requiring insulation, and
subjected to longitudinal or rolling movement (resulting
from temperature changes other than climatic).
Saddles may be used with Shoe / Anchor Supports.

ANCHOR (A1, A2, A5, ETC.)
A rigid support which
prevents transmission of
movement (thermal,
vibratory, etc.) along
piping.

TRUNION / DUMMY LEG (L26, L27, L28, ETC.)
An extension piece (of pipe or rolled steel section)
welded to on Pipe / Elbow in order to support the line.
BASE PLATE (L29)
Steel plates at the end of trunion / dummy leg is welded
to L26, L27, & L28 supports at site, to suit.
TEFLON SLIDE PLATE (L25)
Steel plates with a Teflon (material of low friction) facing
are used, as it withstand Mechanical Stress and
temperature changes.

16. TELESCOPIC SUPPORTS
(Ref. Drg. : RPL-SK-216)
Telescopic Supports are used wherever trunion is resting
on a pedestal.
Select proper size of the Telescopic support to avoid
misalignment.
Always cover the trunion plate with brown masking tape
where it rest on telescopic support to avoid grouting
material to enter in between.
Provide proper gap between guide and trunion plate.
