This document provides an overview and update on the PINES consortium and its integrated library system, Evergreen. Key points include:
- PINES was created in 1999 to provide a shared ILS and policies to enable resource sharing across Georgia libraries. It transitioned to the open source Evergreen system in 2006.
- Features recently added to PINES include a web-based client, quick reports, and executive snapshot reports. Upcoming upgrades include preferred names, name searching, and RBDigital integration.
- Current projects are focused on improving acquisitions interfaces, consolidating alerts, and on-demand testing of notifications.
- PINES is undergoing strategic planning and an ILS evaluation to guide its future development
2. PINES Overview (Speedy Version!)
● Y2K Project for libraries needing replacement ILS
● Desire for statewide library card (“borderless library”)
● Phase I - late 1999
● Phase II - 2001
● PINES member libraries retain own identity, but share the ILS and a set of policies that
guarantee a consistent user experience
● Policies are governed by the PINES Executive Committee, a board of nine PINES
member library directors from systems serving various population sizes.
● Shared courier system assures timely delivery of remote hold requests.
3. PINES Overview (Speedy Version!)
● Became clear with Phase II additions that PINES needed more than the current ILS
provided.
● 2004 - ILS Evaluation - nothing was a good fit.
● GPLS decided to build in-house an open source ILS that could accommodate PINES.
● September 2006 - Evergreen goes Live
● 2006 - 2018
○ Growth of Evergreen adopters, contributors into a full-fledged open source community
○ PINES instance of Evergreen stabilized, with timely tech support and regular upgrades
4.
5. Evergreen Community Overview
● Began as GPLS system staff + a few volunteers
● Equinox Software, Inc. (ESI)
● BC PINES (now SITKA), Michigan, Indiana, Project Conifer
● 2009 - Evergreen International Conference
● 2010 - IMLS Grant Partners: KCLS, Massachusetts, Bibliomation
● 2011 - Evergreen Oversight Board & Software Freedom Conservancy
● 2012 - Evergreen Hack-A-Way
● 2016 - MassLNC
● 2017 - Equinox Open Library Initiative (EOLI)
6. Transition to the Web Client
● Original Staff Client: XUL (Mozilla) - cutting edge tech in 2005
● Used as the basis for Firefox, Thunderbird, & Songbird
● 2010 Evergreen “locked in” to a specific version of XULRunner
● 2011-2013 Mozilla removes XULRunner from Firefox
● 2015 XULRunner deprecated
● 2013 - Evergreen Community decides to build browser-based client on AngularJS
framework.
7. Transition to the Web Client
● Browsers don’t talk directly to the OS they run on, so storage and some printing
features are not available.
● Solution: Hatch, a Java-based “shim” that relays messages between the web client and
the OS for printing and file storage.
● PINES went live with web client in January 2018
○ Cataloging features were not ready
○ Hatch problems
○ “white screen” problems
● Overall, very successful
● Evergreen 3.2 (PINES 1/2019) removes XUL client by default
8. Migration of Live Oak Public Libraries
● Summer 2017 - LOPL board votes to move to PINES
● Concurrent with PINES migration to web client
● Multi-pronged approach:
○ Staff Training - Circ, Cataloging, Admin, Policy
○ Technical Evaluation
○ Practice Migrations
● Data migration performed by Emerald Data Networks and PINES staff, February 2018
○ 153,628 new titles in PINES

Features

11. Quick Reports
Allows non-techie library staff
to run on-demand or
recurring reports with minimal
training.
Provides access to most
commonly asked-for types of
information on items, patrons,
holds, bills, and circulations.
12. Quick Reports
Staff simply selects the type
of report they wish to run, fills
out a few fields, and can then
download the results in Excel.
Possible reports are available
for Bills, Circulations, Holds,
Items, and Patrons.
13. Executive Snapshot Reports
The Executive Reports are a
set of reports that are
automatically run at the end
of each month on behalf of
the PINES libraries.
Instantly accessible from any
location or device.
Select the information you
want to see from a simple
form...
14. Executive Snapshot Reports
And retrieve the
results instantly,
already formatted
and compiled.
Shows trends from
previous month and
year.
Can be viewed on
screen, printed, or
downloaded in Excel
format.
15. Linked Data
Bibliographic data is exported
on a monthly basis and
converted into a structured
form of data that can be fully
understood and utilized by
search engines and other data
analysis tools.
NoveList Select data (author
pages, series information,
etc.), as well as geographic
data, is integrated with the
library data, enriching the
content.
16. Linked Data
The linked data pages also
provide code libraries can
copy & paste into web sites
for easy content sliders.

J. Elaine Hardy
PINES and Bibliographic Projects Manager
ehardy@georgialibraries.org
25. Objectives for functionality
● Vendor digital/electronic content be fully integrated into the existing PINES catalog.
● It must track and supply real-time data on the number of items a patron has borrowed and
on their holds list.
● It must share real-time availability status for content, in all formats (Kindle, Nook, etc.).
● It must account for the organizational complexity of the PINES consortium.
● It must be able to authenticate a patron within an environment that includes members and
nonmember users.
● It must further be able to authenticate a patron within the GADD content structure where
some GADD libraries provide additional content for their.
● Rather than being dependent on bibliographic or item records within the PINES database,
the interface should rely on user entered search terms and filters within the PINES OPAC.
33. Upcoming!
● January 2018 - Upgrade to Evergreen 3.2
● PINES Colocation Move
○ QTS since 2005
○ BOR ITS beginning in April 2019
