ICRISAT developed pigeonpea varieties that are resistant to wilt disease, have high yields and large seeds. These varieties are widely grown in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda, and have increased farmers' incomes by up to 80%. The improved varieties and institutional innovations that enabled access to seeds and markets have led to the commercialization of pigeonpea in eastern and southern Africa. Adoption of the new varieties has reached 60% in some areas, with pigeonpea now providing over 50% of smallholders' cash income. The increased pigeonpea production and income has benefited farmers through investments in assets, education, and diversified livelihoods.

ICRISAT’s Seed Systems Models and Lessons Learned booklet explains the rationale of ICRISAT’s work on seed systems in the drylands, the different approaches and their impact on the ground. Improving farmers’ access to improved seeds in the drylands is seen as a cost-effective strategy to improve farm productivity and food security. Different models of seed systems are tested and developed by ICRISAT and its development partners in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia depending on the local context. It includes small seed packets, groundnut seed revolving fund in Malawi, support to community-based systems, farmer seed organizations or local seed ventures, and public private seed partnerships like the Hybrid Parents Research Consortium for pearl millet and sorghum in India. ICRISAT’s vision on seed systems is demand-driven, holistic and working in partnership, along the crop value chain.
Small companies and informal trade plays an important role in East African agriculture but are typically out of view. This study examines patterns of and incentives for private sector investments and activities in climate-smart agriculture (CSA) in East Africa. Building capacity of private sector entities and improving their coordination with the public sector so that smallholders are not excluded may be key to facilitating the scaling up of agricultural innovations that improve food security for smallholders grappling with a changing climate (Jayne et al.
2006; Gyau, 2015).

Malawi Seed Industry Development Project (MSIDP)- A Malawi Seed Alliance News...ICRISAT
The Government of Malawi is working with ICRISAT, CIAT and the Malawi Seed Industry Development Project (MSIDP II) to increase the utilization of legumes and cereals as a means of reducing malnutrition and stunting in women, children and other vulnerable groups in the country. Over 7500 farmers have so far obtained training on processing and consumption of these foods since the start of MSIDP II in 2016. According to the latest Integrated Household Survey (IHS4) report released in 2018, over 35% of Malawians are malnourished. To tackle this issue, MSIDP II has intensified efforts to enhance consumption of agricultural produce among the local populace, with a focus on food processing and utilization.

National Chickpea Innovation Platform: Way forward in EthiopiaTropical Legumes III
Bringing together all actors in the chickpea value chain was a key focus for setting up a National Chickpea Innovation Platform. Other new initiatives include enhancing chickpea productivity and marketing based on the targets of the Ethiopian Growth and Transformation Plan 2 (GTP2) and enhancing household consumption for nutrition and food security– were discussed at a recent workshop in Ethiopia.

ICRISAT’s Gender Research Program recently brought together breeders, value chain stakeholders and social scientists from Mali, Ghana, Burkina Faso and Nigeria to define priority traits of cultivars of sorghum, millet and groundnut during a 4-day workshop. Prior to the workshop, studies were carried out with the national agricultural research systems (NARS) partners in the above countries, to examine and assess the trait preferences of key stakeholders, especially taking into account the specificity of traits with respect to gender-related needs. The results of these studies were presented during the workshop. The expected output is priority trait demands translated into new market-driven and gender-responsive product profiles for the breeding programs at ICRISAT and NARS.

4CAST: New digital tool to enhance farmers’ access to modern varietiesICRISAT
To improve smallholder farmers’ access to new improved varieties, a digital variety catalog tool created by ICRISAT in partnership with public and private institutions was recently launched. Called 4CAST, the tool is a user-friendly data driven platform that gives information about new improved varieties, quality and availability of seeds nationally and regionally. 4CAST, which stands for Digital Tools 4 Cataloguing and Adopting Improved Seed Technologies, also provides stakeholders in seed value chains a digital workflow, decentralized access, real-time tracking of progress, private catalogues as well as seed roadmaps.

A virtual hands-on training program on developing geospatial maps for supporting insurance products using Google Earth Engine and semi-automatic techniques was conducted for participants in Pakistan as part of the project “Strengthening Post-COVID-19 Food Security and Locust Attacks”. The nine participants were from the PARC Agrotech company (PATCO) technical team and crop reporting service teams from Punjab and Sindh in Pakistan. They were introduced to remote sensing and its applications in agriculture. Hands-on training using Google Earth Engine (GEE), Image Processing Software – ERDAS 2015 and various automatic classification techniques was provided along with several applications for using these modern tools.

ICRISAT and HarvestPlus signed an agreement for scientific and technical collaboration between the two global organizations. Mr Arun Baral, CEO, HarvestPlus, and Dr Jacqueline d’Arros Hughes, Director General, ICRISAT, signed the Memorandum of Understanding, which is made and entered into by IFPRI on behalf of its HarvestPlus Program. On the occasion, Dr Hughes said, After 17 years of fruitful collaboration on biofortification research, we have now decided to elevate this partnership. ICRISAT and HarvestPlus will work together more closely, making available micronutrient-rich varieties, high-quality seed and related technologies to the farming communities and consumers. and are widely grown in eastern and
southern Africa (ESA), increasing
farmers’ incomes by up to 80%.
Until recently, farmers were unable
to fully exploit the potential because
local varieties were low-yielding, late-
maturing and susceptible to pests
and diseases. Small-seeded varieties
failed to meet market requirements;
market linkages were underdeveloped;
and farmers could not access seed of
improved varieties.
These factors deprived farmers of the
benefits of a sizable export market.
India alone imports over 254,000
tons of pigeonpea per year, but Africa
supplied less than 5% of this demand.
Similar high-value niche markets exist
in Europe and the Americas.
Domestic demand for pigeonpea has
grown substantially over the last few
years, increasing wholesale prices.
The innovation
v ICRISAT and partners developed high
yielding, slightly early, cream colored, large
seeded and fusarium wilt resistant varieties.
v Availability of improved varieties along with
institutional innovations enabled farmers
to reduce the cost of product marketing,
spurring commercialization of the crop.
v Recognizing the demand for improved seeds, local agro-dealers (called
Agrovets) contract farmers to multiply high quality seeds, supported by
local extension systems for training and farmer organization.
v The commercial produce is marketed through producer marketing
groups (PMGs). This collective action enables smallholder farmers to
sell quality grain at higher prices.
The impact
v Commercialization of pigeonpea enables farmers to buy valuable
assets ranging from mobile phones to land, houses and livestock.
v Farmers have invested in small ruminants, milking cows and bullocks,
helping them diversify and expand their income sources.
v Increased income enables increased school enrollment of children.
v In Babati district – famous for high quality pigeonpea – adoption of
improved varieties has reached 60%, and pigeonpea alone contributes
more than 50% of the cash incomes of smallholders.
v ICRISAT-developed varieties dominate the fields. ICRISAT efforts have
resulted in expansion of area under pigeonpea in the last 10 years from
0.45 m ha to 0.82 m ha in ESA. Pigeonpea consumption has increased
as the bean crop has succumbed to pests and the changing weather
patterns that the hardy pigeonpea can withstand.
v Maize has traditionally been the main crop, but fails in three out of five
years. Families now rely on pigeonpea, and have also realized the
potential of fresh vegetable pigeonpea in the domestic market.
v PMGs facilitated community seed
production, local distribution and market
access, and helped to increase local
producer prices by 20–25% in Nairobi
and Mombasa after linking producers to
wholesalers.
v Most importantly, introduction of medium-
duration varieties (ICEAPs 00554 and
00557) provides for two crops a year. This
attribute of early maturity allowed spreading
of pigeonpea to non-traditional areas in
Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania.
v Enterprising women farmers lead
demonstration of pigeonpea technology
and proudly call it “our dryland white
coffee”, as well as “our beef”, alluding to
its high protein content.
