This document summarizes the activities of the World Federation of Medical Managers (WFMM) in June 2014. It discusses:
1) The WFMM members meeting hosted by the NHS in England, including presentations on medical leadership and workshops on revalidation.
2) The WFMM Steering Committee annual meeting where Dr. Roger Boyd retired as chair and was replaced by Dr. Lee Gruner.
3) An upcoming special issue journal on health services management and leadership featuring articles contributed by WFMM members.
Thomas Piketty's book "Capital in the Twenty-First Century" has become a surprise bestseller in the US, sparking much debate about inequality. Piketty argues that wealth inequality has grown significantly in recent decades as returns on capital outpace economic growth, allowing the wealthy to accumulate more wealth through inheritance rather than work. While his statistical analysis of growing inequality has attracted attention, the real reason for the book's popularity is that it forces Americans to confront the fact that the American Dream myth of social mobility is increasingly untrue as the US now has more unequal wealth distribution than most other nations. The book highlights tensions between the country's egalitarian ideals and reality of growing oligarchy.
Belle analogie con il Giulio Cesare di Shakespeare! Totalmente d'accordo, tranne sull'ultima frase. Non vedo un ruolo dei Dipartimenti di Prevenzione!!!

Todd Wilms shares 10 leadership lessons he has learned over 20 years in leadership positions at major companies. The lessons include focusing on long-term strategy rather than short-term gains, prioritizing building trust over titles, and understanding that leadership is defined by how you handle failures as well as successes. Wilms draws on his experience at companies like eBay/PayPal, Citrix Online, and PeopleSoft to offer advice for developing leadership skills.
Margaret Thatcher's time as Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990 overlapped with the author's early years as an editor at the BMJ. Thatcher attempted to suppress reports that highlighted inequalities in health and evidence that increasing alcohol prices reduced harm. As an individualist who disbelieved in society, Thatcher did not like public health and the sociologically-inspired articles on alcohol policy written by the author. Thatcher largely stayed away from the NHS due to public affection for it, but her proposals to introduce market mechanisms and management sowed the seeds for further reforms. While her changes did not seem radical in retrospect, they contributed to a sense that the traditional NHS was ending.
This document discusses the relationship between research evidence and decision making in the context of health system reform. It makes three key points:
1) While decisions are influenced by many factors besides evidence, good research can guide decision makers towards better policies by highlighting issues and limiting discretion. However, evidence must also be seen as an empowering tool.
2) Health system reform is currently widespread as countries address both old and new health challenges. Reform processes need research to illuminate unknowns, and a research agenda should be integral to every reform initiative.
3) Essential National Health Research (ENHR) has an important role by ensuring research priorities are participatory and address national problems. ENHR can contribute to reform at
