Physical Therapy Internship Essay
I am incredibly lucky to have been fortunate enough to say that I worked hands on with a Physical Therapist over this past summer. It was an
experience I will never forget and one that I will treasure forever. Throughout this internship, I wasn't forced to just watch on the sidelines. I was able
to interact with patients and hear their stories. I was able to assist in performing electrotherapy, hot therapy, and cold therapy. I realized how important
bedside manner is, especially when patients are despondent. Every action I made, had a reaction. If I looked dispassionate, patients would react
instantly. Their morale would take a huge hit. They would feel like a burden. Whereas if I looked motivated, it would be contagious. They would be
more determined to push through the pain, to recover quicker....show more content...
I crave something fast paced. Although I may not pursue a career in physical therapy, this experience has reassured me that working in health care is
something I want to go after. Nothing would make me happier than making someone's day just a slight bit

Reflection Paper On Physical Therapy
As an Athletic Training major, completing clinical rotations since my freshman year, I work with student athletes to provide injury evaluation and
management, emergency care, and rehabilitation in order to help them return to play at peak performance. During my Freshman year, I realized that
the rehabilitation portion of Athletic Training was my favorite part of my studies. I realized that I want to work with a wider range of patients helping
them to improve their ability to move and function. During sophomore year, I began completing physical therapy observation hours. I have seen
physical therapists in four different settings. Each has shown me diverse aspects of the field as well as demonstrated the importance of professionalism
in both the DPT student and the practitioner.
One of the most important aspects of professionalism as a student in a physical therapy degree program is the ability to communicate effectively.
Through my observation hours, I have seen the necessity of clear communication between physical therapists, other healthcare practitioners, and
patients. Physical therapists often work in conjunction with other healthcare providers, such as surgeons, physicians, or other specialists. Goals for a
patient must be clearly identified and coincide with the goals of the other clinicians. Establishing effective written communication skills is essential.
Proper documentation of services provided is needed for billing purposes, legal records, and for communicating

Physical Therapists And Physical Therapy Essay
Physical therapists have become a highly respected and necessary part of the healthcare team, yet the process of becoming a physical therapist has
become increasingly challenging. Physical therapy students must maintain a high GPA in order to remain in highly competitive doctoral programs
and must also successfully complete several clinical experiences over the course of, on average, three years. For many students, their first clinical
experience can be very intimidating because it will be the first time they have been in a type of setting other than the classroom. Often times, they will
have no idea what to expect or how to prepare. Physical therapists also have the additional challenges of dealing with drastic changes in the profession
that include the disparities in healthcare, escalating healthcare costs, and the demand for more efficient and cost–effective practice (Hayward et al.,
2013). The scope of physical therapy practice is also evolving to include direct access as the norm in all 50 states, including Washington D.C. This
change requires ever–growing autonomy and clinical decision making skills for all physical therapists (Hayward et al., 2013).
Clinical affiliations are an integral part of the doctor of physical therapy (DPT) education. Currently, all physical therapy students in the United States
will graduate with a doctoral degree. Along with this relatively new advancement in the field, it is the expectation that entry–level physical therapists are

patients rehabilitate with disabling injuries such as fractures, arthritis and low–back pain. Their duty is to help patients their relieve pain, increase
mobility, and decrease long–term physical disabilities. Physical therapists focus on the evaluation of strength, balance, range of motion, co–ordination,

option for physical therapists.
A Description of the Basic Requirements Needed to Obtain this Job (e.g., type of degree)
In order to be successful in the profession as a physical therapist there are several prerequisites a person has to accomplish. One of the first
prerequisites to become a physical therapist is you must graduate from a physical therapist educational program and obtain a master or doctoral degree.
The master's degree programs for physical therapy typically are two to two and a half years in length, while doctoral degree programs usually last 3
years. In addition to classroom and laboratory instruction, students will complete supervised clinical experience to get a feel of the work environment.
The coursework will include physics, biology and chemistry. Other additional coursework included during the physical therapy program is therapeutic
procedures, biomechanics, examination techniques, human development, manifestations of disease, and neuroanatomy. You can specialize in one of
those certain topics, which will concentrate more on a certain area. Students must also obtain a license in order to practice physical therapy. A license

Imagine the inability to physically walk or do so pain free, or to sit, or do any type of daily routine without any sort of constant complications.
Whether a person has been injured, born with a disability condition, or a disability occurred due to aging, there is a way to help treat many
complications. Participating in a physical therapy rehabilitation program can help to heal an injury by proper, safe exercises to strengthen and prevent
further injury or by teaching one to change their mechanics, which in turn will create a better way to manage daily routines safely and pro actively.

(Hensley). Mary McMillan treated many men and women with the goal to assist in their recoveries of injuries, with the intention of returning them to
the condition that they were before the injury, or as closely as possible. Initially, when being introduced to physical therapy, there is an examination
to determine and evaluate a patient, and to determine what method of treatment should be followed to assist in recovery and prevention of further
injury. When a program has been designed, it is designed specifically to treat that individual's injury or disability, as every injury and goal of an
individual is subjective. It is devised to treat and reduce pain if any. Therapeutic heat is frequently used to ease muscle pain and aches because it may
"reduce muscle guarding and spasm, and aid tissue elasticity" (Hensley), then to create a safe and constructive way to exercise and educate the patient
for treating and preventing future injuries. While heat is used to reduce muscle pain, "heat increases blood flow, also aiding in healing many injuries, it

People have created a hectic and busy world, that includes careers and daily activities that require physical activity. While attempting to attain the
required physical conditioning, people often take chances with their personal health as they try to stretch their physical limits. Sometimes, people can
surpass their current limits and form new boundaries; however, other times people are not so fortunate. These unfortunate times often lead to injury,
including workplace accidents, sporting incidents, disease afflictions, as well as others; any or all of which could bring about the need of rehabilitation

internships which are held in various parts of the United States and its affiliate provinces, such as the Dominican Republic, Philippines, as well as
Guam and others. These internships are set up in order to provide the student with a variety of problem solving skills, and may or may not be paid

program, you are eligible to apply for a license in the state(s) where you wish to practice. All states require a national licensure examination, but the
passing score and other requirements vary from state to state" (Careers in Rehabilitation). Once certified, the student has graduated into his/her

As the week continues to progress, I have been able to gain more knowledge. This week, I began to assist the physical therapist with the electrical

Altruism: The ultimate goal of a physical therapist is to improve a patient's quality of life. With this ability to do so, it is important for a therapist to
use their skills in a way to give back to their community. This devotion to helping people inside and outside of the clinic is important to share as it
improves overall wellness within our society. Prior to working as a PT technician, I spent a year volunteering in physicaltherapy settings. I was able to
learn and assist in PT related tasks within a hospital, outpatient clinic, and pediatric clinic. I've also participated in community events that have involved

In addition to these factors you have to consider the environment outside of PT settings. People within our society maintain bad habits not only because
they choose to but because they are sometimes simply unaware of the long term affects. It is a matter of engaging with people within your environment
and providing a good presentation to promote wellness. As individuals who have a better understanding of negative consequences pertaining to health,
we should be active participants in events that can help others spread this presentation as well. I hope to one day be more involved as a therapist in
community events that involve education, fitness, nutrition and activities that have an impact on the lives of others.
Excellence: Excellence is a key component behind the practice of evidence–based care in the profession of physical therapy. As a doctoring profession
that utilizes high levels of research, the knowledge invested into care will lead to well–constructed successful outcomes. Physical therapy will continue
to expand and excel in the quality of patient centered care. I've worked hard to meet goals throughout my undergraduate education and will continue to
meet higher standards as a graduate student. As a future professional, I will aim far beyond what is necessary to meet basic requirements, and

It is predicted that by the year 2020, more than 40 million people in the world will have this progressive neurological condition (Morris 579). This

properly send messages and it leads to a loss of muscle function (Kantor 3). The goal of physical therapy for people with Parkinson's Disease is to
help them perform every day activities with the disease. Walking is one of the most common difficulties people with Parkinson's Disease encounter,
and is one of the areas physical therapist spend a lot of time with. One way physical therapist help their patients walk is by using visual cues. An
example of a visual cue is white lines on the floor spaced at step length. Another area of concern that a physical therapist would address is turning
around. An elderly person without Parkinson's Disease can do a 360п‚° turn in fewer than six steps. A person with Parkinson's Disease usually needs
to take twenty steps. A physical therapist would address this by training the person to concentrate in a larger arc of movement and to use a full body

Essay on Physical Therapy and Kinesiology
Physical therapy and kinesiology work in a close relationship to each other. Essentially one may think they are one in the same, however there are
small differences between the two that provide different results when applied singularly. As a combined effort physical therapy and kinesiology work
to heal the muscles and joints of the body, recreating movements perfectly as they were before injury or in some cases as closely as one can get to a
perfect function. First one must understand where the lone is drawn between the two fields and how they balance each other to create desirable results

Essentially the belief, in simplified words, proves that diet and core specific exercise can manipulate and change a person's health, including reactions
to environmental stimulants such as pollen or dust.
Physical therapy takes a more direct pathway towards a more specific problem with the human body. Physical therapy is a rehabilitation that works
towards a goal of helping patients maintain, improve, or recover their physical abilities, most often times after an accident causing traumatic injury or
arthritis (Mayo School of Health Sciences). Patients of a physical therapist often come in solely for the purpose of regaining their movement, not the
health aspect involved behind it. Most patients of this therapist have suffered sports injuries, traumatic accidents, over even simply a problem of
weakening with age such as those who suffer arthritis or other weakening of the joints and muscles. With step by step sessions focusing purely on
strengthening the muscles and joints required to perform the movement functions, the patients rebuild their way from movement with pain, to no pain
or suffering involved in everyday activities. When a patient begins therapy, they more or less begin with baby steps such as stretches and hydrotherapy
to allow the body to relearn the movements without pain (What is Physical Therapy?). As the patient increases in strength

Physical Therapy Internship Essay

  • 1. Physical Therapy Internship Essay I am incredibly lucky to have been fortunate enough to say that I worked hands on with a Physical Therapist over this past summer. It was an experience I will never forget and one that I will treasure forever. Throughout this internship, I wasn't forced to just watch on the sidelines. I was able to interact with patients and hear their stories. I was able to assist in performing electrotherapy, hot therapy, and cold therapy. I realized how important bedside manner is, especially when patients are despondent. Every action I made, had a reaction. If I looked dispassionate, patients would react instantly. Their morale would take a huge hit. They would feel like a burden. Whereas if I looked motivated, it would be contagious. They would be more determined to push through the pain, to recover quicker....show more content... I crave something fast paced. Although I may not pursue a career in physical therapy, this experience has reassured me that working in health care is something I want to go after. Nothing would make me happier than making someone's day just a slight bit Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Reflection Paper On Physical Therapy As an Athletic Training major, completing clinical rotations since my freshman year, I work with student athletes to provide injury evaluation and management, emergency care, and rehabilitation in order to help them return to play at peak performance. During my Freshman year, I realized that the rehabilitation portion of Athletic Training was my favorite part of my studies. I realized that I want to work with a wider range of patients helping them to improve their ability to move and function. During sophomore year, I began completing physical therapy observation hours. I have seen physical therapists in four different settings. Each has shown me diverse aspects of the field as well as demonstrated the importance of professionalism in both the DPT student and the practitioner. One of the most important aspects of professionalism as a student in a physical therapy degree program is the ability to communicate effectively. Through my observation hours, I have seen the necessity of clear communication between physical therapists, other healthcare practitioners, and patients. Physical therapists often work in conjunction with other healthcare providers, such as surgeons, physicians, or other specialists. Goals for a patient must be clearly identified and coincide with the goals of the other clinicians. Establishing effective written communication skills is essential. Proper documentation of services provided is needed for billing purposes, legal records, and for communicating Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Physical Therapists And Physical Therapy Essay Physical therapists have become a highly respected and necessary part of the healthcare team, yet the process of becoming a physical therapist has become increasingly challenging. Physical therapy students must maintain a high GPA in order to remain in highly competitive doctoral programs and must also successfully complete several clinical experiences over the course of, on average, three years. For many students, their first clinical experience can be very intimidating because it will be the first time they have been in a type of setting other than the classroom. Often times, they will have no idea what to expect or how to prepare. Physical therapists also have the additional challenges of dealing with drastic changes in the profession that include the disparities in healthcare, escalating healthcare costs, and the demand for more efficient and cost–effective practice (Hayward et al., 2013). The scope of physical therapy practice is also evolving to include direct access as the norm in all 50 states, including Washington D.C. This change requires ever–growing autonomy and clinical decision making skills for all physical therapists (Hayward et al., 2013). Clinical affiliations are an integral part of the doctor of physical therapy (DPT) education. Currently, all physical therapy students in the United States will graduate with a doctoral degree. Along with this relatively new advancement in the field, it is the expectation that entry–level physical therapists are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Physical Therapy as a Career Essay A Detailed Description of the Job/Position The job I plan on pursuing with kinesiology as my major is to become a physical therapist, which is also known as PT. Their main duty is helping patients rehabilitate with disabling injuries such as fractures, arthritis and low–back pain. Their duty is to help patients their relieve pain, increase mobility, and decrease long–term physical disabilities. Physical therapists focus on the evaluation of strength, balance, range of motion, co–ordination, endurance, and posture of each individual patient. Physical therapists also can consult and practice with other professionals, such as physicians, dentists, nurses, educators, social workers, occupational therapists, speech–language pathologists, and audiologists to help them with their treatment to a patient. Conducting research or teaching is another job option for physical therapists. A Description of the Basic Requirements Needed to Obtain this Job (e.g., type of degree) In order to be successful in the profession as a physical therapist there are several prerequisites a person has to accomplish. One of the first prerequisites to become a physical therapist is you must graduate from a physical therapist educational program and obtain a master or doctoral degree. The master's degree programs for physical therapy typically are two to two and a half years in length, while doctoral degree programs usually last 3 years. In addition to classroom and laboratory instruction, students will complete supervised clinical experience to get a feel of the work environment. The coursework will include physics, biology and chemistry. Other additional coursework included during the physical therapy program is therapeutic procedures, biomechanics, examination techniques, human development, manifestations of disease, and neuroanatomy. You can specialize in one of those certain topics, which will concentrate more on a certain area. Students must also obtain a license in order to practice physical therapy. • 5. Essay on Physical Therapy Imagine the inability to physically walk or do so pain free, or to sit, or do any type of daily routine without any sort of constant complications. Whether a person has been injured, born with a disability condition, or a disability occurred due to aging, there is a way to help treat many complications. Participating in a physical therapy rehabilitation program can help to heal an injury by proper, safe exercises to strengthen and prevent further injury or by teaching one to change their mechanics, which in turn will create a better way to manage daily routines safely and pro actively. Mary McMillan treated many men and women with the goal to assist in their recoveries of injuries, with the intention of returning them to the condition that they were before the injury, or as closely as possible. Initially, when being introduced to physical therapy, there is an examination to determine and evaluate a patient, and to determine what method of treatment should be followed to assist in recovery and prevention of further injury. When a program has been designed, it is designed specifically to treat that individual's injury or disability, as every injury and goal of an individual is subjective. It is devised to treat and reduce pain if any. Therapeutic heat is frequently used to ease muscle pain and aches because it may "reduce muscle guarding and spasm, and aid tissue elasticity" (Hensley), then to create a safe and constructive way to exercise and educate the patient for treating and preventing future injuries. While heat is used to reduce muscle pain, "heat increases blood flow, also aiding in healing many injuries, it should not be applied within 48 hours after injury" (Sports Injuries) because it can increase swelling. • 6. Physical Therapy Essay People have created a hectic and busy world, that includes careers and daily activities that require physical activity. While attempting to attain the required physical conditioning, people often take chances with their personal health as they try to stretch their physical limits. Sometimes, people can surpass their current limits and form new boundaries; however, other times people are not so fortunate. These unfortunate times often lead to injury, including workplace accidents, sporting incidents, disease afflictions, as well as others; any or all of which could bring about the need of rehabilitation services. The student should also prepare for at least three, six–week internships which are held in various parts of the United States and its affiliate provinces, such as the Dominican Republic, Philippines, as well as Guam and others. These internships are set up in order to provide the student with a variety of problem solving skills, and may or may not be paid experiences. Finally, the student must be certified by the state in which he/she wishes to practice. "Upon completion of an accredited education program, you are eligible to apply for a license in the state(s) where you wish to practice. All states require a national licensure examination, but the passing score and other requirements vary from state to state" (Careers in Rehabilitation). Once certified, the student has graduated into his/her career as a physical therapist. The list of educational requirements is fairly long and extensive, but should prepare the interested person for a fulfilling career in this field. This week, I began to assist the physical therapist with the electrical stimulation machine. This device is for patients who has posterior or shoulder pain. The machine send steady electrical impulses to target the exact spot of pain, which relaxes and smoothes the muscles. The therapist is the only one allowed to controls the machine, however I assist with setting up the electrodes by spraying the ECG (electrode spay) onto them. This spray intensifies the electric impulse for higher quality treatment. Also, I place heating packs on top of the electrodes in order for the heat to loosen up the muscles for instant pain relief. It is $2,181 for undergraduate tuition, and for room and board $2,195 for shared dorms, or $3,095 for private dorms per semester ("Tuition and Fees Information"). • 10. Physical Therapy Reflection Paper Altruism: The ultimate goal of a physical therapist is to improve a patient's quality of life. With this ability to do so, it is important for a therapist to use their skills in a way to give back to their community. This devotion to helping people inside and outside of the clinic is important to share as it improves overall wellness within our society. Prior to working as a PT technician, I spent a year volunteering in physicaltherapy settings. I was able to learn and assist in PT related tasks within a hospital, outpatient clinic, and pediatric clinic. I've also participated in community events that have involved high school sports physicals and as well other events involving physical activities. Social Responsibility– Social...show more content... In addition to these factors you have to consider the environment outside of PT settings. People within our society maintain bad habits not only because they choose to but because they are sometimes simply unaware of the long term affects. It is a matter of engaging with people within your environment and providing a good presentation to promote wellness. As individuals who have a better understanding of negative consequences pertaining to health, we should be active participants in events that can help others spread this presentation as well. I hope to one day be more involved as a therapist in community events that involve education, fitness, nutrition and activities that have an impact on the lives of others. Excellence: Excellence is a key component behind the practice of evidence–based care in the profession of physical therapy. As a doctoring profession that utilizes high levels of research, the knowledge invested into care will lead to well–constructed successful outcomes. Physical therapy will continue to expand and excel in the quality of patient centered care. I've worked hard to meet goals throughout my undergraduate education and will continue to meet higher standards as a graduate student. As a future professional, I will aim far beyond what is necessary to meet basic requirements, and continually pursue growth. Exemplar: I have attached a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

They help them regain their health well–being through therapy that involves mechanical force and movements as portrayed in the interview. An advantage of performing this interview was that from it I learn a lot about the physical therapy profession. A relevant aspect during this interviews was that both interviewees give details on how important working together as a team helps the health professionals to give their patients the best care possible.
