A study by MIT found that the H1N1 influenza virus in India may have undergone mutations making it more dangerous than previous strains. However, the National Institute of Virology in India refuted the findings, saying their genetic analysis of samples from the 2015 outbreak did not show these mutations. Researchers stressed the need for better surveillance to gather more scientific data about the new strain and determine if mutations are causing the current outbreak. As of the latest data, 1,537 swine flu deaths and 27,234 positive cases have been reported in India.
Dr. Alick Isaacs and Dr. Sam Baron discovered interferon in 1957 using a plaque assay. They published their findings in the Proceedings of the Royal Society showing that interferon could be measured and helped inhibit viral replication. Later work by Glasgow in 1980 and an adapted figure from Dianzani and Baron's 1996 medical microbiology textbook helped further explain the interrelationships between interferon and immunity during viral infections, particularly for acute influenza virus infection.

This summary provides the key details from the annotated bibliography in 3 sentences:
The annotated bibliography describes a longitudinal study that explored the role of the Borna Disease Virus in psychiatric patients over 21 years by measuring antibodies against the virus in patient samples. The study found that patients with advanced schizophrenia had higher levels of antibodies than those with early-stage schizophrenia, providing evidence that the virus may contribute to or support the development of schizophrenia. However, the study only used one testing method to detect the virus and could have benefited from additional varied testing to strengthen its findings.

investigation of a suspected outbreak of japanese encephalitis in pulau langkawiSiti Mastura
This document summarizes an investigation of a suspected outbreak of Japanese encephalitis (JE) in Pulau Langkawi, Malaysia in June 1979. Of the 10 cases studied, 6 (60%) were confirmed to have JE through serological testing, while another 2 (20%) were suggestive of JE. The outbreak appeared localized to 2 areas on Langkawi island, predominantly affecting individuals ages 5-15. Mosquito vectors for JE were present but the animal linking human and mosquito transmission cycles could not be identified. This investigation confirmed JE as the cause of the outbreak.

An Australian mosquito species, Aedes notoscriptus, has been found for the first time in California. It is able to spread viruses like Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus under laboratory conditions. Aedes notoscriptus lives in natural and artificial containers near human habitats. It can travel up to 200 meters and be spread greater distances through human transport. While a minor public health risk compared to Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, it is a reminder of how easily exotic mosquitoes can spread. More research is needed to understand interactions with existing species and whether it consists of complex of cryptic species. This study summarizes epidemiological, clinical, and microbiological data from 100 culture-positive cases of sporotrichosis in Sub-Himalayan India over 18 years. The majority (71%) presented with lymphocutaneous lesions, while 28% had fixed localized lesions and 1% had disseminated sporotrichosis. Hands were the most common site of lesions (32%). The male to female ratio was 1:1.27, and most patients were between 31-60 years old. Seasonal trends showed most cases presented in March-April. This is the largest study to date of culture-proven sporotrichosis cases in the most endemic region of Sub-Himalayan India.
This case report describes a 27-year-old female who presented with 10 days of fever followed by altered sensorium, jaundice, and diplopia. She was found to have right lateral rectus palsy. Testing found positive IgM antibodies for scrub typhus, dengue, and chikungunya. Based on the clinical presentation and response to doxycycline treatment, scrub typhus was determined to be the cause. This represents one of the rare reported cases of isolated lateral rectus palsy caused by scrub typhus. Family physicians should be aware of the availability of affordable scrub typhus testing in India and consider it as a potential cause of fever of unknown origin given its endemicity in

1) An epidemiologist is investigating a potential TB outbreak involving 5 cases in a church choir. DNA testing revealed that 3 cases share the same strain from Africa, including a homeless man from Somalia who is thought to be the index case.
2) Further investigation found that all 5 cases were members of the same church choir. Two additional confirmed TB cases were identified from the choir.
3) The suspected index case sang in both the 8am and 11am choirs as a tenor. In the winter months, he occasionally carpooled to church with one of the new cases, who also sang as a tenor in the 8am choir.
The document discusses MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), a viral respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus called MERS-CoV. It summarizes 8 clusters of MERS cases that occurred between 2012-2013 in several countries and provided evidence of human-to-human transmission. It also discusses the virology of coronaviruses including MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV, comparing their size, reservoirs, countries affected, mortality rates, treatments and clinical symptoms. MERS-CoV cases have largely been reported from the Arabian Peninsula with a mortality rate around 50% and person-to-person transmission is still not fully understood.

Atlas of chest imaging in covid-19 patients-springer (2021)heiwa7843
This chapter provides an overview of COVID-19 and the role of chest imaging in diagnosis and management. COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2 and presents as an acute respiratory illness. Chest CT and X-ray play an important role in diagnosis, assessing disease severity, monitoring progression, and evaluating recovery. This atlas collects chest imaging data from COVID-19 patients to aid understanding of the disease course and imaging manifestations at different stages.
This document provides an introduction and preface to an atlas of chest imaging in COVID-19 patients. It was edited by Jinxin Liu, Xiaoping Tang, and Chunliang Lei from Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital in Guangzhou, China. The atlas contains 922 chest images from 295 confirmed COVID-19 cases to illustrate the imaging manifestations at different stages of the disease. It aims to serve as a reference for medical professionals and researchers studying COVID-19 pneumonia. The preface provides context about the editors' experience during the 2003 SARS outbreak and their efforts to understand and treat COVID-19 based on scientific principles and complete data.
"Zombies Medical Mystery .... or Reality" was an educational exhibit showcased in October 2013 at the University of South Florida Shimberg Health Sciences Library. I researched three diseases and three disease pathogens that present with "zombie" symptoms such as decaying flesh, missing brain mass, and catatonic affect.
This document discusses common themes and defenses in medical malpractice cases related to (1) failures or delays in ruling out serious or life-threatening conditions, (2) failures to act on abnormal test results, and (3) failures or delays in calling a physician about changes in a patient's condition. It provides examples from actual malpractice cases involving failures to diagnose conditions like abdominal aortic aneurysms and epidural abscesses in a timely manner. It also discusses challenges physicians face in following up on large volumes of abnormal test results in a busy practice.

Imad Al-Sadoon, Yacoub AA, Najwa Abdull-Karim. Accidental poisoning among children in Basrah: an epidemiological perspective. J Fac Med (Baghdad) 1988;30(1):105-112.
This study assessed outcomes of arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) created for hemodialysis access in 67 patients in Baghdad, Iraq over 6 months. Most fistulas were brachiocephalic (91.4%) and functioned initially. Complications included thrombosis (22.2%), aneurysms (4.5%), and steal syndrome (13.6%). Thrombosis was higher than reported rates, while aneurysms and steal syndrome were within typical ranges. The study concluded that initial AVF success was good, but late complications like thrombosis were a concern.
To date, the Registry has epidemiology and quality-of-life data from 11,180 self-registered patients with 4,196
well-characterized samples of DNA, lymphoblast lines, and sera for future research studies.
The SARS outbreak began in China in late 2002 and spread to 29 countries, infecting over 8,000 people and killing 800. SARS is caused by a novel coronavirus, which was identified in 2003. It is transmitted through respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces. Common symptoms are fever, cough and difficulty breathing. Healthcare workers were particularly at risk due to exposure to aerosol-generating procedures. International air travel helped spread SARS rapidly worldwide.

dentist David Acer, who had AIDS.
•In December 1987, dentist Dr. David Acer removed two of
Bergalis's molars. Acer was HIV-positive at the time, having been
diagnosed that fall.
•In March 1989 Bergalis began to show symptoms of AIDS and was
diagnosed with the disease in January 1990.
• The Center for Disease Control (CDC) initial report that she had
likely acquired her infection from her dentist prompted Acer to
write an open letter requesting that his patients be tested for HIV

16. SUMMARY
The first cases of SARS appeared in late 2002 in the Chinese
province of Guangdong.
It grew into a major outbreak in the next few months (January
through February 2003).
The majority of the infected individuals acquired the disease in the
Guangzhou Hospital.
A doctor who had worked in this hospital traveled to Hong Kong in
February 2003 and stayed at the Metropole Hotel.
The doctor and a number of other hotel guests all became infected
with the virus and traveled to different destinations (Vietnam,
Canada, Singapore, Taiwan) carrying the disease and the virus.
