3. Students will take a photo from their own
“world” and write about it
Learning objectives:
O to provide opportunity for participants to
share their story through the prism of the
photo;
O Sequencing and storytelling;
O Writing skills; grammar skills; to develop
creative skills; critical thinking skills; English
language skills (of EL groups) of participants
in the project;
O Connecting content to students personal lives/
interests
4. O “An image contains a story, a narrative, a life of its own, and
what we see is influenced by our individual perceptions and
perspectives at a given point in time. The photograph spurs
thoughts and stimulates ideas. The photograph motivates
and inspires writing and it is through writing that students
can learn more about a subject, reflect upon their lives, and
express themselves”.
-Sharon J. Washington, executive director of the National
Writing Project
O Photos can be used as an effective guided writing tool to
facilitate students' writing process and to improve their
writing proficiency ( Lee, 1994).
5. What makes a good photo?
O Not any photo will work. The photo should draw
the student into the picture. If there's a ‘’world” in
the photo, then there's something to write about.
O Does the photo make you ask a question?
O Do you wonder what happened before/after the
photo?
O Does the photo tell a story?
O Does the photo make you wonder why the
photographer took the photo?
O Is the picture clear?
O Do you wonder what's happening outside the
frame?
6. What is Photo-Based
Writing?
O Photo-Based writing is a teaching strategy
that uses photographs as writing prompts to
generate thoughtful pieces of work from
writers of all ages. Pictures are a great tool to
use to inspire writing. All students have the
capacity to write when they are given a
starting point. Photos are a fantastic starting
point for writers. Photos can generate ideas,
trigger questions, and tell a story. The writer
finds inspiration from the photo. This strategy
provides students with an opportunity to take
a photo and create their own story.
7. Language to write a story
O English language teachers and students
from English language groups- will submit
the story on English
O Math teachers/IT teachers and their
students can submit on Kyrgyz or Russian
language (but if they wish on English too-
go ahead!)

O Why Do We Learn the English Language?
O I am Zhumakerimova Dinara Tokonovna .I have been working as an English teacher,
for about 23 years at the secondary school Kyzyl-Dobo.
O I am sure; in order to have a good job one should know foreign languages. To my mind
the widest spread languages in the world are: English, Spanish and Chinese. But
every well-educated person in the world speaks English, because it is the language of
communication, business, science and culture. Nowadays English is the most
important and widespread language in the world.
O English is spoken practically all over the world; it has become the world’s most
important language in politics, science, trade, and cultural relations. Nowadays a lot of
people studying English language in every possible way. There are some schools
specialized in studying English language in big cities: such as Bishkek, Naryn, Osh,
Kara-Kol etc... Their pupils have lessons in English language every day. But most
schools have English language once or twice a week. It’s impossible to learn English
language in such conditions. That’s why those students who want to improve their
English have to take private lessons. My village is far away from the city center and
even from Kochkor region center. We don’t have volunteer from America. My students
don’t have a lot of chance to speak English. There are many interested students in my
school. And also we don’t have enough English text books for all students in my
school.
12. O I have been working with Aga-Khan fund for about ten
years.” Learning support program” provides the school with
modern and good books and tapes and a stereo. With the
help of this program I want to support interested students in
my village: to improve their English and try to provide better
and good quality lessons. My students have great desire to
be able to speak English well and to communicate with
English speaking people. They have dreams to work in
international organizations and study abroad. The students
want to have a good job so that they can take care of their
families and help their community. For this reason I try to
help them and support.
O English is international language; it is the language of
business, diplomacy and international relation. I am sure it
is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for
every good specialist to know English well today.
13. O We interviewed social workers, staff of medical institutions
and for students it was like directing a movie, but a movie
based on true story. And the story teaches that Aynura, who
wasn’t born with hands like normal children were, leads a
life of hardworking, smiling girl who is grateful for being
alive and focuses on good things, rather than complaining
about what she lacks.
O The story is about caring, sharing and inclusivity. If children
from regular schools mix and mingle with children with
special needs, they can teach each other so many things.
Gratitude, kindness, strength, gratefulness, staying positive,
overcoming hardships with smile. And this was the greatest
experience for all of us.
14. O Third, as part of this program, my colleagues and school
principal were invited to trainings as well. We met teachers
and administration of other schools, and during one of the
meetings, we were advised by one of the principals of Ak
Talaa school, to approach administration of our village.
There is a paragraph in state budget, which is called
“Funds for special purposes”. And we applied for it. In the
application papers, we explained how the equipment that
we want to buy (Camera, interactive board, projector) would
improve our work and fortunately, our Village administration
has approved it and issued us 35,000 Kyrgyz soms from
state budget. It is huge success for us, as we wouldn’t be
able to collect this money ourselves. The whole school is
happy, because we can use it for all classes and events,
not only English classes.

O About Learning Support Program
O Murzakulova Anara
O Sh. Beishenaliev school
O Ak-Talaa region
O Village Baetov
O
O My name is Anara Murzakulova. I am from Ak-Talaa region and I work at Sh.
Beishenaliev secondary school. I would like to tell about the project. I have
been working in this project for 9 years. I can call myself as an experienced
teacher thanks to the Aga-Khan foundation. But what is the Learning Support
Program like? Learning Support Program is an educational program and it has
been working in different spheres such as in business, medicine and
education. I am going to tell you about the benefits of the project. As an
English teacher, I can say that we have done some good jobs. Teachers of the
project have trained a lot and got many certificates. Working in this project, we
improved our professional skills, participated in trainings and conferences.
O The project is always covers our transportation, meal, materials for lessons. At
training times, we learn new teaching styles, share with the ideas, play games,
and make presentations.
16. O Learn to use IT. Our program coordinator Natalya and assistants always
support us. I have 45 students, they are starter, beginner, elementary and pre-
intermediate levels. Thanks to this program, my students improved their
speaking skills, pronunciation and other skills. Our school leavers got the best
results from this program. This program helped them to get good education, to
go and work in abroad, get good jobs and use their skills in the life.
O Here you can see three photos of my students. As you can see, we held
English courses in the English classroom. In the photo, there are my starter,
elementary and pre-intermediate level students. During the course, my
students learn vocabulary, retell the texts, describe, answer and ask
questions, learn grammar and do tests. Sometimes they learn games, do
crosswords, listen stories.
O Other teachers of Russian, Chemistry and Biology subjects are interested to
join to this project. They want to open the courses in these spheres.
O At the end, I want to tell a lot of thanks to Aga-Khan foundation for supporting
teachers and the best building of University of Central Asia. We always need
support of this project and every success to Learning Support Program.

профессии свои заботы, а требование времени одно;
Outreach in Naryn villages».

O ‘’The gift from my grandfather’’
O In this photo you can see my family is big and friendly. This photo
was taken in September. It was time when apple tree falling down,
because of big harvest. Taking advantage of this natural beauty and
for memory of these happy days we decided to take a photo.
Looking at this amazing apple tree I admire.
O When I was little, in 2007 grandfather brought seedlings from
Barskon, Issyk-Kul. We planted them in our garden. From that time
many years passed. Small seedlings grew up and began to give
fruits. My grandfather was hard-working man and he knew all the
secrets of gardening. He looked after apple trees very tenderly,
loving them more than his life. Every year in spring grandfather
softened the ground under the trees and watered them .We, his
grandchildren loved him and ate his apples with a pleasure .In
photo I was holding my grandfather, because I was very close to
him. At that time we were very happy family in our small village.
29. O But unfortunately, in 2016 my gran father passed away. This year
was very difficult for our family. In that terrible year, the apple trees
did not bloom in spring, and did not give fruits in fall. It was very
strange .My grandmother said; ’’Grandfather took care about them,
loved them, even apple trees were sad and missed him”.
O For our family apple trees had become a big gift from grandfather.
O Today, when I see apple trees I always remember my dear
grandfather and in my eyes appear tearing.
O This photo is very important for our family.
O I am very happy to share with you about my family. Because .I am
